Google I/O 2021 Keynote (Part I) - What’s New?
Hello fellow developers, today is the first day of a big event for us. Google I/O 2021 is started on the 18th of May and we are waiting for delicious updates on Google Products. After the Keynote event, I decided to write about the news given at this event. (Hint: The event was inspirational, watch the whole video, I would say.) I hope you enjoy the article. :)
Providing High-Quality Info for Covid-19
Covid-19 affected every community like businesses and schools. According to Sundar Pichai, Google worked closely with non-profit organizations to help these communities and launched products and initiatives to help each other with these communities. These products and initiatives helped students and teachers keep learning, adapting small businesses to new normals, and emergency relief for people in need. At Google, they helped people to access high-quality and authoritative information for covid-19 in cooperation with CDC, FDA, and, WHO including accurate vaccine information. According to Sundar Pichai, covid related information is viewed hundreds of billion times.
Google Maps Updates
Google is trying to grow with one ultimate goal, according to Sundar Pichai, “Building a more helpful Google for everyone”. Thanks to this goal, Google added 150 thousand kilometers more bike lanes to Google Maps.
- Eco-friendly routes
Using their understanding of road and traffic conditions, Google Maps will soon give users the option to take the most fuel-efficient routes to reduce significant amounts of emissions and fuel consumption.
- Safer Routing
With the help of the power of AI, Maps will identify road and traffic conditions to create safer routes. Google is aiming to reduce incidents with this new feature.
- Live View
According to Liz Reid, Google will release 100+ improvements to Maps. One of them is Live View. They are adding AR navigation to Maps(left-side pic.) Users can travel the locations via Google Maps. Also, users will be accessing live view directly from the Map and will instantly see the details(right-side pic.)
In addition to these features, Google announced several features for Google Maps.
- Street signs in the Live View.
- Landmarks and necessary buildings to users like hotels that they're staying or restaurants.
- Indoors to help users navigate in buildings like airports, train stations, and malls.
- Detailed Street Maps
Another feature is the detailed map. You can see street lights, sidewalks, crosswalks, pedestrian islands. Detailed street maps will be added to 50 cities by the end of the year.
- More Tailored Map
Sometimes we see a lot of information on the maps. It can be overwhelming. To solve this Google will make the map more dynamic by highlighting the most relevant locations exactly when you need them. For instance, at 08.00 you will have bakery shops or coffee shops more on the map or at 17.00 you will have diners or restaurants on the map.
On the other hand, if you are in a new city, the map will show you landmarks or tourist attractions.
- Area Busyness
With this feature, users can check area busyness.
Smart Canvas
Last year coworkers changed their workspace and offices thanks to covid19. With so many people now working from home, access to collaboration tools gain importance. Google introduced the “Docs” and “Sheets” in 2006 to help people to collaborate. After a year, they announced “Slides”. They are part of Google Workspace. The new member of Google Workspace is Smart Canvas. Google is aiming to enable richer collaboration with this new product.
Users can:
- Add team members to share the document.
- Write goals or brainstorming topics.
- After sharing the document, coworkers can drop their ideas for brainstorming.
- The “Assisted Writing” feature helps you to use more accurate and more effective words by suggesting words.
- Sharing
After the update, users will be able to share Sheets, Docs, and Slide that they working on directly to a Google Meet call. This feature will enable teams to hear and see each other while they are working on the same document.
Google Meet Updates
- Voice Cancellation
With the power of AI, Google Meet will cancel unwanted voices to enhance communication.
- Automatic Lighting Adjustment
Google Meet will adjust your video zoom and lighting with the help of machine learning.
- Customized Views
Users will be arranging the video tiles of their coworkers according to their needs.
- Live Captions
Google Meet will allow you to open captions and even translations for international coworkers to follow the meeting.
LaMDA(Language Model for Dialog Applications)
The CEO of Google Sundar Pichai announced their latest breakthrough LaMDA. LaMDA is a language understanding model to make more natural conversations with AI. I have put the video of the full conversation below.
Safer with Google
According to Sundar Pichai, all Google products are guided by three important principles. These are Secure by Default, Private by Design, and You’re in Control.
Secure by Default
To keep their users safe, everything that Google builds is secure by default. Each of their product is protecting by the most advanced AI-driven technology and Google has announced 4 new upgrades for Password Manager.
- A simple tool to import passwords from other password managers.
- Deeper Integration across both Chrome and Android to use passwords at both of them.
- Automatic Password Alert will let you know if any of your saved passwords are compromised.
- An assistant to navigate directly to compromised accounts to change passwords in seconds.
Private by Design
According to Jen Fitzpatrick, Google thinks continuously for making thoughtful decisions about when, how, and why data is used in their products. Google claims that they never sell the data to anyone and they never use stored data for ads.
You’re in Control
Google thinks that privacy is personal and they are upgrading some of their products to allow users to choose what is right for them.
MUM (Multitask Unified Model)
MUM is a technology for making data accessible and useful. Google will use this technology to understand data types like voice, image, text, and the Google engine will respond accordingly. MUM is 1000x more powerful than the BERT model. The most important side of this technology is the ability to multitask in order to unlock information in new ways. Some of the tasks that MUM can do at the same time:
- Acquires deep world knowledge
- Generates language
- Trains on 75+ languages
- Understands multiple modalities
Now, let's look at the answer.
Google Lens
Google Lens lets you search what you see with your camera and photos. According to Prabhakar Raghavan, people use Google Lens to translate over a billion words every day. Google is working on new capabilities that combine visual translation with educational content from the web to help people learn. For instance, you took a picture of a science problem and the lens will provide learning resources in your preferred language, Mr. Raghavan says.
Let’s watch a good example of this new capability in the short video.
That is a lot to digest, right? But still, these developments allow us to take a glimpse into the future. More will come with part II. I hope you enjoyed reading this article and also keeping up with new technologies. Thanks and byee!
