How to send SMS for free with Twilio

Before you commit to an SMS service, it helps to test it out and see if you like the platform. Twilio offers a free trial so you can get familiar with the platform and test the different capabilities. Here’s a walk-through of how you can use your Twilio free trial account.

How to get a free business phone number with Twilio

Once you sign up for a free trial and verify your contact information, you can get a free Twilio phone number by clicking “Get a Trial Number.” Twilio will recommend a free number that you can use to test your applications.

If you’re interested in purchasing a number, head over to the menu and click on Phone Numbers under the Super Network. Here, you’ll have the option of searching phone numbers according to area code, what words you might like within the number, and the capabilities of the number (like SMS, MMS, and Voice).

When you set up SMS, you may be asked to provide your phone number in the E.164 format. All this means is to format the number with a +, country code, and the 10 digit number, including the area code. It would look like this for a U.S. number: +14155552671.
