An Insight into Behavioral Questions and Answers

Recently, I have been going through interviews and I am lucky to have received offers from multiple big players (FAANG included) in the industry. A very important aspect of these interviews is how we deal with behavioral questions. When you apply at any company, apart from your technical soundness, another thing that matters is whether yours and the company’s (leadership) principles are in alignment or not. This alignment and your capability is tested by asking behavioral questions. There exist many guides on how to prepare for this, but I think this article might serve as a compilation of some of the best guides plus some findings of my own.

Hence in this article, I include some tips but mostly ‘the must prepare behavioral questions’ before heading into any interview.

Questions

  1. Tell me about yourself.
  2. Describe your most challenging/ any project.
  3. Was there any delay in the delivery of that project?
  4. What was the most challenging part of this project?
  5. Have you taken any risks?
  6. What was your contribution to the project?
  7. What is the hardest bug you have faced?
  8. What have you learned from any one of your mistakes?
  9. Why this company?
  10. Which leadership principles of the company inspire you the most?
  11. Have you demonstrated any leadership principles in these projects?
  12. What were the biggest risks and what did you do to mitigate them?
  13. Have you faced any conflicts/ disagreements?
  14. Did you improve any existing processes while working on this project?
  15. What went right and wrong with those projects?

Now, some tips on how to answer these questions.

  1. You will observe that answering questions individually is relatively easy. The situation gets difficult when they are asked in a way as to trap you into contradicting your answers. So, the first tip is to plan thoroughly and keep your story straight.
  2. When should you prepare these questions? Before convincing the interviewer convince yourself that you are the best candidate for this job. According to me, you should prepare for these questions even before your first round because the information from one round is passed on to other rounds and it might become difficult to adjust your story in later stages.
  3. Every answer in a story and if possible (mostly is) should project you as a good fit for the job, team, or organization. Each question is asked to get a measure of a certain skill and your answers should instill confidence in the interviewer that you have it. And there is a limit to exaggeration and one should be cautious of it.
  4. Now coming to the structure of answers. Wherever possible you should follow the STAR pattern of answering questions as it helps you in achieving your goals of answering that question. It translates to Situation, Task, Action, and Result. You can read more of this here.
  5. Pay attention to company leadership principles and principles highlighted in the job description. These too hold a significant importance.
  6. Apart from these, appear excited for the role you are interviewing for. Wear a smile and confidence for the interviews.
  7. There’s always something that can be learned from experienced guys so learn from the interviewer and make him feel important.

That is all I can think of for now. These pointers have helped me succeed and I hope they bear the same fruits for you as well.

Wish you all the luck.
