What You'll Need
You will need the following resource in order to complete this vector summer camp logo:
- Knicknack font
1. How to Create a New Document and Set Up a Grid
Hit Control-N to create a new document. Select Pixels from the Units drop-down menu, set the Width and Height to 850 px, and then click that More Settings button. Select RGB for the Color Mode, set the Raster Effects to Screen (72 ppi), and then click Create Document.
Enable the Grid (View > Show Grid) and Snap to Grid (View > Snap to Grid). You will need a grid every 5 px, so simply go to Edit > Preferences > Guides & Grid, enter 5 in the Gridline every box and 1 in the Subdivisions box. Try not to get discouraged by all that grid—it will make your work easier, and keep in mind that you can easily enable or disable it using the Control-" keyboard shortcut.
You can learn more about Illustrator's grid system in this short tutorial from Andrei Stefan: Understanding Adobe Illustrator's Grid System.
You should also open the Info panel (Window > Info) for a live preview with the size and position of your shapes. Don't forget to set the unit of measurement to pixels from Edit > Preferences > Units. All these options will significantly increase your work speed.
2. How to Create the Sun
Step 1
Pick the Rectangle Tool (M) and focus on your Toolbar. Remove the color from the stroke and then select the fill and set its color to R=191 G=246 B=255.
Move to your artboard and click and drag to create a 280 x 200 px shape—the grid and Snap to Grid will make it easier.
Step 2
Switch to the Ellipse Tool (L) and hold down the Shift key as you click and drag to easily create a 280 px circle. Fill this new shape with R=254 G=209 B=77 and place it exactly as shown in the following image.
Step 3
Make sure that your circle is still selected and go to Object > Path > Offset Path. Set the Offset to -30 px and click OK. Change the fill color of this new shape to R=254 G=193 B=14.
3. How to Create the Tent
Step 1
Using the Selection Tool (V), select your blue rectangle. Press Control-C to copy it and then Shift-Control-V to add a copy in the same place.
Replace the fill color of this new shape with R=114 G=0 B=0 and then switch to the Direct Selection Tool (A). Hold down the Shift key to select the top anchor points and then go to Object > Path > Average. Check the Both box and click OK to easily turn your rectangle into a triangle.
Step 2
Grab the Ellipse Tool (L) and use it to create a 280 x 400 px shape. Fill this ellipse with R=206 G=55 B=37 and place it exactly as shown in the first image.
Switch to the Selection Tool (V), select your triangle, and add a copy in front (Control-C > Control-F). Hold down the Shift key to select this copy along with the ellipse added in this step and click the Intersect button from the Pathfinder panel (Window > Pathfinder).
Step 3
Make sure that your red shape is still selected and add two copies in front (Control-C > Control-F > Control-F). Select just the top copy and press the up arrow key twice and the left arrow key once, which will move your selection 10 px up and 5 px to the left.
Now, hold down Shift to select both copies added in this step, and click the Minus Front button from the Pathfinder panel. Fill the resulting shapes with R=254 G=209 B=77.
Step 4
Hold down the Shift key to select the red shape along with the slim yellow one and go to Object > Transform > Reflect. Check the Vertical box and click the Copy button. Place the newly made shapes as shown in the second image.
4. How to Add the Text
Step 1
Reselect the Rectangle Tool (M) and use it to create a 280 x 60 px shape. Place it as shown in the following image and fill it with R=254 G=209 B=77. Keep this rectangle selected, switch to the Direct Selection Tool (A), and focus on the control panel to set the Corner Radius to 10 px.
Step 2
Finally, select the Type Tool (T) from your toolbar and focus on the Character panel (Window > Type > Character) to set the settings for the text that you're about to add.
Select the Knicknack font and set the size to 40 pt, and then you can click on your artboard. Type in "SUMMER CAMP", set the text color to R=206 G=55 B=37, and place it as shown in the following image. With this final touch, your vector summer camp logo is complete.
