This post comes from some interesting tweets I saw, and really speaks to how difficult it can be to get the right amount of "correctness" when you seek to find out about how technology works.
Maybe you know the answer posed in the title, maybe you think you know, maybe you were afraid to ask. Lucky for you, @bnb came asking.

@bitandbang They're not better or worse, just different. 5ghz being higher frequency can provide higher bandwidth under optimal conditions; 2.4ghz being lower frequency can travel "through" more things. 5ghz has higher bandwidth, 2.4ghz has better penetration.
E.G. Phones use tons of diff freq for this reason, 5g uses 36-24ghz, 2.5-3.7ghz and 600-850mhz, all because of penetration problems with higher freq.16:06 PM - 17 Sep 2021

@bitandbang 5GHz is better in every way. The myth (see other replies) that 2.4 GHz is longer range comes from bad APs which scan for open channels and pick the least busy ones which are the subset of channels that are permitted for less power output than 2.4 GHz.15:46 PM - 17 Sep 2021

@bitandbang The main benefit of 5 GHz comes from the many more available channels and hence less congestion. If you really want good Wifi you want
- a modern AP (they got sooo much better over the last 4 years)
- have many APs on the same SSID (ideally one per room) and wire them together.15:48 PM - 17 Sep 2021
That's a whole different story. But the whole Internet is telling me about "shorter range" at 5GHz.
I don't want to leave anyone here with an absolute conclusion, as I don't want to take anyone here "at face value".
If anyone wants to go deeper in the comments in the comments with some absolute facts on the issue, I very much welcome them.
