Welcome to the Sands of MAUI—newsletter-style issues dedicated to bringing together latest .NET MAUI content relevant to developers.
A particle of sand—tiny and innocuous. But put a lot of sand particles together and we have something big—a force to reckon with. It is the smallest grains of sand that often add up to form massive beaches, dunes and deserts.
Most .NET developers are looking forward to .NET Multi-platform App UI (MAUI)—the evolution of Xamarin.Forms with .NET 6. Going forward, developers should have much more confidence in the technology stack and tools as .NET MAUI empowers native cross-platform solutions on mobile and desktop.
While it is a long flight until we reach the sands of MAUI, developer excitement is palpable in all the news/content as we tinker and prepare for .NET MAUI. Like the grains of sand, every piece of news/article/video/tutorial/stream contributes towards developer knowledge and we grow a community/ecosystem willing to learn and help.
Sands of MAUI is a humble attempt to collect all the .NET MAUI awesomeness in one place. Here's what is noteworthy for the week of October 11, 2021:
.NET MAUI Community Standup
While Maddy Leger was busy getting married, Sweekriti Satpathy joined David Ortinau to host the latest .NET MAUI Community Standup. The two provided updates to the .NET MAUI roadmap and covered all the cool things happening in the developer community around .NET MAUI. They were then joined by the special guest for the show—Dmirty Lyalin, who shared the latest news about .NET Hot Reload for .NET MAUI. While lot of things are in works, the tightening of the inner dev loop for .NET MAUI developers is coming along nicely.
.NET MAUI Community Toolkit Standup
The usual suspects around the .NET MAUI Community Toolkit—Brandon Minnick, Gerald Versluis, Javier Suarez and Pedro Jesus, got together to host the latest .NET MAUI Community Toolkit monthly standup. Topics covered included planning sprints, working with GitHub issues, converting Effects to Behaviors and Windows support with .NET MAUI Community Toolkit. It is really good to see the transparency as work moves forward, and the honest responses to community questions.
Automation with .NET Community Team
During the recent Azure Serverless Conf, James Montemagno and Jon Galloway did an awesome keynote on how to automate all the things. The .NET Community Team enables and nurtures the .NET developer community to be more successful—providing support across a wide plethora of community focused programs.
As a part of the .NET Community Team, James and Jon talked through how they automate some of the team workflows utilizing a wide combination of Azure technologies—Azure Functions, Logic Apps, Cosmos DB and SQL DB. It was great to see the behind-the-scenes work that enables popular .NET shows, community standups and developer conferences—all powered by the latest .NET, Teams, Office and Azure technologies.
Secure Storage in Xamarin Apps
Most mobile apps have to deal with sensitive user data and developers need to way to protect such data in a secure, encrypted way on the users' devices. Gerald Versluis produced a video on how to work with Secure Storage in Xamarin apps. Thanks to Xamarin Essentials, managing data securely is easy and Gerald showcased how to use Secure Storage to store/retrieve sensitive content. One might wonder how data management with Secure Storage may evolve with .NET MAUI—there is no reason to change what is already working nicely.
Telerik R3 2021 Release Webinar
Do your .NET apps need some polished performant UI components out of the box? Developers should always look around for the best tools for their given projects, but the Telerik family of products might be able to help big time. There was a big Telerik R3 release with UI goodness for .NET devs across web, desktop and mobile.
Resident web expert Ed Charbeneau showed off all the hotness around web components—from Ajax, MVC, .NET Core and of course, Blazor. The other developer advocate was just glad to be able to talk for an hour while fighting a bad cold—and cover all the cool updates across mobile and desktop UI suites. Notably, lots of love included in the latest release for .NET MAUI and Xamarin, enabling developers to ship better mobile apps faster.
That's it for now.
We'll see you next week with more awesome content relevant to .NET MAUI.
Cheers, developers!
