What You’ll Need to Create an Easter Dinner Menu Template

1. How to Apply a Vector Background to a Brunch Menu

Step 1

Open the Flower Pattern eps file in Illustrator. Select the entire layer of flowers. Go to Object > Ungroup. Do this action about five more times to make sure all of the layers are ungrouped.

Step 2

Now, let’s format this file for printing. Change the mode to CMYK by selecting File > Document Color Mode > CMYK Color. Grab your Selection Tool (V) and select the dark orange color. Go to Select > Same > Fill Color, and you should now have all the dark orange areas selected.

Step 3

Double-click the Fill box from the Swatches panel and change the color to C26 M81 Y0 K0.

Step 4

Select the medium orange color and Select > Same > Fill Color. Double-click the Fill box from the Swatches panel and change the color to C14 M54 Y0 K0.

Step 5

Select the light yellow background and delete it. Remove several flowers near the border (areas circled in red below to show you where I removed flowers). We will use these empty sections to overlay flowers onto our Easter menu design in InDesign. Save this file as a transparent Floral.eps file.

2. How to Create an Easter Menu Card in InDesign

Step 1

Create a new document (File > New > Document) in InDesign with these settings:

  • 8.5 x 11 in
  • Pages: 1
  • Margins: 0.5 in
  • Bleed: 0.125 in on each side

Create a new swatch in the Swatches panel using C19 M0 Y14 K0

Step 3

Using the Rectangle Tool (M), make a rectangle that fills the entire background with the color you just created. Go to File > Place and select the floral.eps file. Your file should now fill the entire background.

Step 4

Double-click inside this floral layer and make it smaller. You may need to zoom out for this: View > Zoom Out. While holding down the Shift key, hover over a corner and resize your floral graphic.

Rotate your graphic so that it’s vertical by using the Selection Tool (V) and hovering over a corner until the rotate icon appears.

Create a new dark green swatch in the Swatches panel: C55 M6 Y41 K46.

Step 7

Using the Rectangle Tool (M), create a rectangle using the dark green swatch. The size of my rectangle is 7.3335 x 9.5085 in

Step 8

Apply an Inner Shadow effect (Object > Effects > Inner Shadow). 

Blending

  • Mode: Multiply | Black swatch
  • Opacity 43%

Position

  • Distance: 0.0972 in
  • Angle: 120°
  • X Offset: 0.0486 in
  • Y Offset: 0.0842 in

Options

  • Size: 0.3125 in
  • Choke: 0%
  • Noise: 0%

Step 9

Add an Outer Glow effect.

Blending

  • Mode: Screen | Paper swatch
  • Opacity: 75%

Options

  • Technique: Softer
  • Size: 0.0972 in
  • Noise: 0%
  • Spread: 0%

Click OK.

Step 10

Go to Options > Corner Options and change the corner shape to Fancy.

Step 11

Go back to our floral.eps file in Illustrator and change all of the flowers to the dark green color. Save this file as floral2.eps.

Step 12

In InDesign, select the dark green rectangle and File > Place the floral2.eps file. Double-click inside the dark green rectangle and resize the floral2 layer how you see fit. Change the Opacity to 15%.

3. How to Organize and Format a Brunch Menu Template

Step 1

Grab your Type Tool (T) and type out “Easter” using the Carena 92 pt font. Use the pastel green color in the Swatches panel for the color. What’s great about this font is that it has glyphs which will come in handy in our next step.

Let’s change up some of the letters by highlighting the letter E. Select the first glyph that comes up.

Continue selecting letters until your image looks like the one below.

Step 4

Using the Type Tool (T), type the word “BRUNCH” using the Redtone Bold 30pt font.

Step 5

Using the Selection Tool (V), select the Easter and Brunch text. Apply a Bevel and Emboss effect.

Structure

  • Step: Inner Bevel
  • Technique: Smooth
  • Direction: Up
  • Size: 0.0972 in
  • Soften: 0 in
  • Depth: 100%

Shading

  • Angle: 120°
  • Altitude: 30°
  • Highlight: Screen | Paper swatch | Opacity 75%
  • Shadow: Multiply | Black swatch | Opacity 10%

Click OK.

Step 6

Apply a Drop Shadow effect.

Blending

  • Mode: Multiply | Dark green swatch | Opacity: 20%

Position

  • Distance: 0.0625in
  • Angle 135°
  • x Offset: 0.0442 in
  • Y Offset: 0.0442 in

Options

  • Size: 0.0625 in
  • Spread: 0%
  • Noise: 0%

Click OK.

Step 7

Grab the Ellipse Tool (L) and make a circle on top of the words Easter and Brunch. Change the swatch to None. Grab the Type on a Path Tool (Shift-T) and hover over the circle path until a plus sign appears. Type out “Food” and “Fun” using a new swatch: C3 M17 Y88 K0.

Step 8

Copy (Command-C) and paste (Command-V) this circle path. Change the text to “Family” and “Friends”. Move this text to the inside of the circle by selecting the point (circled in red) and dragging it towards the center. Rotate this circle so that it’s beneath the Easter and Brunch text.

Step 9

Open up floral.eps in Illustrator, and let’s grab some elements to overlay on our dark green border. Copy (Command-C) and paste (Command-V) these elements into InDesign. Do this for the Food, Fun, Family and Friends tagline as well.

Step 10

Using the Type Tool (T), create a text box and type out your menu using these settings:

  • Headline: Carena 15pt | C3 M17 Y88 K2
  • Subheader: Redtone Bold 10pt | C19 M0 Y15 K0
  • Body copy: Redtone Regular 10pt | C19 M0 Y15 K0

Step 11

Apply a Drop Shadow Effect.

Blending 

  • Mode: Multiply | Black swatch | Opacity: 46%

Position

  • Distance: 0 in
  • Angle: 180°
  • X Offset: 0 in

  • Size: 0.1875 in
  • Spread: 0%
  • Noise: 0%

Step 1
