What You'll Need for This Tutorial
1. How to Create a Grunge Background in Photoshop
Step 1
Open Photoshop and create a new document (File > New). Use the dimensions 8.75 x 11.25 in, CMYK Color, and change the Background Contents to Black. Click Create.
Step 2
Unzip the Cardboard texture file and open the Colored Cardboard 6.jpg file in Photoshop. Go to Image > Mode > Grayscale. If a Discard Color Information dialog box pops up, click Discard.
Step 3
Take this grayscale cardboard photo and drag and drop it over to the new document that we just created. Resize the cardboard texture to your liking using Edit > Free Transform (Command-T). Change this layer to Divide with a 70% Opacity.
Step 4
Open the Torn Paper Texture PSD file in Photoshop. Select the 1 Paper Group Layer and convert it to a smart object (right-click > Convert to Smart Object).
Step 5
Grab your Magnetic Lasso Tool (L) and outline the edge of the paper tear like the image below.
Step 6
Copy (Command-C) and paste (Command-V) this torn paper selection into your document with the black cardboard texture. Repeat these same steps again by using the Magnetic Lasso Tool and outlining a different section of the paper texture and pasting it into our black cardboard background.
Step 7
Create a new layer and name it 'Lime Green'. Now select the Pen Tool (P) and trace the inside of your paper tears.
Step 8
Right-click this path and select Make Selection. Select OK when the Make Selection box pops up. Make sure your Feather Radius is set to 0 pixels, Anti-aliased is checked, and Operation is set to New Selection. Now grab your Paint Bucket Tool (G) and fill this layer with #9acb3c
. Change this layer's Blending Mode to Vivid Light.
Step 9
Select these three layers (tears and lime green) in the Layers panel and place them in a group. Right-click > Group from Layers. You can name this group 'Lime Bottom'.
Step 10
Duplicate (right-click > Duplicate Group) this Lime Bottom Group and rename this new group to 'Lime Top'. Adjust this lime tear so that it's smaller and at the top of our background.
Duplicate (Command-J) the Lime Green layer and apply a Color Overlay Layer Style by double-clicking this second Lime Green layer. Change the Blend Mode to Soft Light and the color to #328941
.
Step 11
Save this file as bg.tif on your desktop.
2. How to Create a Trendy Holographic Sticker for a Pop-Up Shop Flyer
Step 1
Create a new document. Use the dimensions 5 x 5 in, CMYK Color, and change the Background Contents to Transparent. Click Create.
Step 2
Grab your Ellipse Tool (U) and create a circle that fills the majority of the document.
Step 3
Open the Holographic Texture in Photoshop. I am using holographic #43 for this tutorial. Drag and drop this layer on top of the circle we just created. Resize this holographic layer to 37% so that it's smaller. Right-click this holographic layer and Create Clipping Mask.
Step 4
Grab the Magnetic Lasso Tool (L) and make a path similar to the image below. With the circle layer selected, Add a Layer Mask (outlined in red).
Step 5
Save the file as a tif on your desktop.
3. How to Edit a Sneaker Using Adjustment Layers
Step 1
Open the sneaker photo in Photoshop. We're going to focus on the main sneaker and crop the other one out. Take your Crop Tool (C) and crop out the other shoe so that it looks like the image below.
Step 2
Go to Select > Subject and then Add a mask (outlined in red). Change this document's color mode to CMYK (Image > Mode > CMYK Color).
Step 3
Using the Magnetic Lasso Tool (L), outline the grey/blue-ish part of the shoe. After you are done outlining, add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. Adjust the Saturation to -71 and the Lightness to -1. Right-click the Hue/Saturation 1 layer and select Create Clipping Mask.
Step 4
Command-click inside the Hue/Saturation 1 layer mask so that the grey part of the shoe is selected again. Now apply a Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer. Change the Brightness to -150 and Contrast to 100.
Step 5
Repeat the last step again by Command-clicking inside the Hue/Saturation 1 layer mask so that the grey part of the shoe is selected again. Now apply a Levels adjustment layer. Change the first point to 77, the second to 0.72, and the third to 255.
Step 6
Take the Magnetic Lasso Tool (L) and outline the pink part of the shoe. Create a Solid Color adjustment layer and fill it with #4cc2c0
.
Step 7
Change the blending mode to Color and create a clipping mask by right-clicking and selecting Create Clipping Mask.
Step 8
Take the Magnetic Lasso Tool (L) and outline the light blue part of the shoe. Create a Solid Color adjustment layer and fill it with #9acb3c
. Change this layer's blending mode to Color Burn.
Step 9
Now we're going to lighten the blue hue that's at the bottom of the shoe. Select Quick Mask Mode (Q) and shade the area at the bottom of the shoe using the Brush Tool (B).
Step 10
Select (Q) again and now you should have a selection of that area you painted in red. Go to Select > Inverse. Add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. Change the Saturation to -44.
Step 11
Select all of the layers in the Layers panel. Right-click and Convert to Smart Object.
Step 12
With the sneaker layer selected, go to Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen and change your settings to the ones below:
- Amount: 200%
- Radius: 13.0 px
- Reduce Noise: 1%
- Remove: Lens Blur
Step 13
Convert this layer to a smart object and change the color model to RGB: Image > Mode > RGB Color. Select Don't Rasterize. Apply a Camera Filter by going to Filter > Camera Raw Filter. Use these settings:
- Contrast: +61
- Highlights: +43
- Shadows: -25
- Texture: -100
- Vibrance: +20
- Saturation: +15
Step 14
Convert this layer to a smart object and change this document's color mode back to CMYK: Image > Mode > CMYK Color. Select Don't Rasterize. Save this file as sneaker.tif. When the TIFF Options box pops up, make sure Save Transparency is selected.
4. How to Create a Vibrant Sneaker Pop-Up Shop Flyer in InDesign
Step 1
Create a new document in InDesign. I'm using the dimensions 8.5 x 11 in, 0.5 in Margins and 0.125 in bleed.
Step 2
File > place the bg.tif, sticker.tif, and sneaker.tif files into the document.
Step 3
Using the Type Tool (T), type out the name of your event using Boldstrom Italic. These are the settings I used:
- Sneaker: 91 pt
- Popup: 107 pt
- Shop: 125 pt
Step 4
Select the Black swatch, change the Tint to 33%, and create a new swatch with this tint.
Step 5
Select the Black 33% swatch and drag and drop it to the first point on the Gradient panel. Select the Paper swatch and place it on the second point. Do the same with the other words. Move the letters behind the shoe by pressing Command-[.
Step 6
With the Type Tool (T) still selected, create another text frame and type out the text for your sticker. Use Boldstrom Italic 19 pt. Grab the Pen Tool (P) and make a straight line for the divider. Change the Stroke to the Black swatch with a 3 pt weight.
Step 7
Using the Type Tool (T) again, add additional information about your event. The swatch colors that I'm using are C45 M0 Y29 K0 and C37 M0 Y100 K0. You can add these swatches by selecting the + icon in the Swatches panel and double-clicking the swatch to change the CMYK values. The subhead text I'm using is Magdelin Regular and Medium.
Step 8
Select both the sneaker and sticker layers while pressing the Shift key. Now, apply a Drop Shadow (Object > Effects > Drop Shadow). The Blending Mode should be set to Multiply, Opacity 75%, with a Distance of 0 in and a Size of 0.1875 in.
