The 10 rules for handling production issues:

  1. Any amount of emotions will not help when a production issue is ongoing.
  2. There will always be a specific cause of the issue, that needs to be identified.
  3. The fix must proceed in a natural progression, trying to fix it faster actually leads to missteps which has the opposite effect of the fix being slower.
  4. Random actions like redeployment will not help.
  5. If the fix takes time, it takes time, the fact that it is production doesn't change a thing.
  6. Come up with a plan to communicate the issue to the impacted customers and execute it.
  7. Come up with a plan to add additional monitoring to the system to catch similar issues in the future.
  8. If the root cause is external then there is nothing much we can do, just execute step six and seven.
  9. Create a production issue protocol, document it, rehearse it and continuously improve it.
  10. Finally, production issues are a part of life, learn to live with it.
