What You’ll Need

To recreate the design above, you will need the following resources:

1. How to Start Creating a Denim Photoshop Brush

First, create a new file. Go to File > New and set the Width and Height to 3000 px and the Resolution to 72 px/in.

2. How to Create a Diagonal Denim Jeans Texture Brush

Step 1

In this section, we are going to create a diagonal denim jeans texture brush. Go to Layer > New > Layer to create a new layer, and name it Texture_1.

Step 2

Now set the foreground color to #000000, go to Edit > Fill, and set the Contents to Foreground Color, Blending to Normal, and Opacity to 100%.

Step 3

Go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise, and set the Amount to 25%, Distribution to Gaussian, and check the Monochromatic option. Then, go to Filter > Pixelate > Mezzotint, and set the Type to Grainy Dots.

Step 4

Now go to Filter > Filter Gallery > Brush Strokes > Spatter, and set the Spray Radius to 25 and Smoothness to 5. Then, go to Filter > Filter Gallery > Texture > Texturizer, and set the Texture to Canvas, Scaling to 200%, Relief to 5, and Light to Top.

Step 5

Go to Filter > Filter Gallery > Texture > Grain, and set the Intensity to 100, Contrast to 25, and Grain Type to Regular. Then, go to Filter > Filter Gallery > Sketch > Halftone Pattern, and set the Size to 7, Contrast to 1, and Pattern Type to Line.

Step 6

Now go to Edit > Fade Filter Gallery, and set the Opacity to 100% and Mode to Hard Light.

Go to Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color to create a new solid color fill layer, name it Texture_1_Color, and choose the color #0f1c50.

Step 8

Now press Control-Alt-G on your keyboard to create a clipping mask. Then, change the Blending Mode of this layer to Color.

Step 9

Go to Layer > New > Layer to create a new layer, and name it Texture_2.

Step 10

Now set the foreground color to #000000, go to Edit > Fill, and set the Contents to Foreground Color, Blending to Normal, and Opacity to 100%.

Step 11

Go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise, and set the Amount to 10%, Distribution to Gaussian, and check the Monochromatic option. Then, go to Filter > Pixelate > Mezzotint, and set the Type to Fine Dots.

Step 12

Now change the Blending Mode of this layer to Soft Light, and set the Opacity to 50%.

Step 13

Go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Brightness/Contrast to create a new brightness/contrast adjustment layer and name it Overall_Contrast_1. Then, Double-click on this layer thumbnail, and in the Properties panel, set the Contrast to -50. After that, press Control-J on your keyboard to duplicate this layer, and name this new layer Overall_Contrast_2.

Step 14

Now Shift-click on the Texture_1 layer to select all layers between, Right-click on any of these layers, and choose Convert to Smart Object. Then, press Control-T on your keyboard to transform this layer, and set the Width and Height to 150% and the Angle to 45°. Name this layer Diagonal Line Denim Texture.

Go to Edit > Define Brush Preset or Edit > Define Pattern to define this texture as a denim Photoshop brush or denim pattern. You can also define it as both, and then use the one that works better with your project.

3. How to Create Ripped Jeans Brushes for Photoshop

Step 1

In this section, we are going to create a loose thread denim Photoshop brush that you can also use as a ripped jeans brush for Photoshop. Go to File > Open, choose the photo from the link, and click Open. Then, choose the Quick Selection Tool (W), and make a selection of one of the loose threads in a photo.

Step 2

Now press Control-J on your keyboard to create a new layer using the selection. Then, press Control-I to invert the colors of this new layer, and press Control-Shift-U to desaturate it. After that, Control-click on this layer thumbnail to make a selection of this layer, and hide the Background layer.

Step 3

Go to Edit > Define Brush Preset to define this selection as a brush. Then, press B on your keyboard, Right-click anywhere inside the canvas to bring up the Brushes panel, and select the brush that we have just defined. Then go to Window > Brush Settings, and use the settings below. 

Once you’ve adjusted the brush settings, go to Edit > Define Brush Preset to define this brush with the new settings as a new brush.

4. How to Apply a Denim Texture Overlay

Step 1

In this section, we are going to apply the jeans brush Photoshop textures to a photo. Go to File > Open, choose the photo from the link, and click Open. Then, choose the Quick Selection Tool (W), and make a selection of the trousers as shown below:

Step 2

Now press Control-J on your keyboard to create a new layer using the selection, and name this new layer Base. Then, press Control-Shift-U to desaturate this layer, and press Control-J to duplicate it. Right-click on this new layer, choose Blending Options, adjust the blending, check the Color Overlay and Pattern Overlay effects, and use the settings below:

The color of the overlay is set to #575d66.

Step 3

Name this layer Denim. Then, press Control-Shift-N on your keyboard to create a new layer, and name it Loose Threads. After that, set the foreground color to #ffffff, choose the Brush Tool (B), pick the loose thread brush that we have previously defined, and brush as shown below:
