How to Make Animated Snow Falling in PowerPoint Slide Background

How to Build a Snow PowerPoint Background

If you want to show winter weather on a PowerPoint template, falling snow is a fun option. In this tutorial, I’ll use the Winter PowerPoint template to show you how to create snowflakes and animate them.

Let’s get started. We’ll be using slide 1:

1. Choose the Snowflake Style

Before adding snowflakes to your PowerPoint, decide what type of snowflakes to use.

There are different styles of snowflakes that you can add to your snow PowerPoint background. Here are some of the styles:

• large
• small
• star
• pattern

In this tutorial, I’ll create the large style snowflakes. If you want to make the other snowflakes, then here’s how:

• Small. Small snowflakes are simple. Just adjust the large snowflakes by dragging on the handles so that they are smaller. These snowflakes are the same as the large snowflake. They’re just smaller.
• Star. The star snowflake is a four-point star layered on top of a six- or twelve-point star. Both stars have a gradient.
• Pattern. This snowflake is the most elaborate. You can use SmartArt snowflakes and change the color to white for this snowflake. However, you can’t make this snowflake a gradient, so it is limited.

2. Change the Slide Background

You want your snowflake to show up. So, if you’ve got a white background, you need to change the background so that the snowflake can be seen.

To change the background, click on the Design tab. The Format Background icon appears at the top right of the screen.

Next, click on Format Background. A side panel appears. In the panel, there’s a Fill Color button. Click on this button and a color palette appears. Select the color you want for your background. 

3. Insert the First Snowflake

To add a snowflake to your snow PowerPoint background, click on the Insert tab above the toolbar. Next, click on the Shapes button in the toolbar.

In the basic shapes section, there is a Circle (on some versions, this may be labeled as an oval). Click on that shape to select it.

Next, click where you want the circle to appear on your slide. Drag and drop the circle shape to size it.

After making the circle click on the Shape Format button in the toolbar. Then click Solid Fill and click on the Color button. When you click on this button, a color menu drops down. Click on the white color.

4. Make the Snowflake More Realistic

To make your snowflake on your snow PowerPoint more realistic, you need to get rid of the outline. Click on the Format Pane button in the toolbar. In the format pane, there’s a Fill & Line tab. Click on that tab.

Under the line section, click on the No Line field. Next, go to the Fill section of the Format tab.

Next, click on the Gradient Fill field and choose the gradient Type as Radial. Next, you’ll see a Direction field. Click on the third option with white in the center. This makes the snowflake look more realistic.

Spread Your Snowflakes

It won’t look like a real snowfall if you just have one snowflake. To create a realistic snowfall, you need snowflakes in the background. Here’s how to create falling snow that covers the whole background:

1. Spread Snowflakes in a Small Area

It’s easier to work in sections when adding to an animated snow-falling PowerPoint background. The easiest way to do this is to copy and paste.

If you want the snowflakes to look realistic, I suggest adjusting them, so they aren’t all the same size.

If you’re going to use a keyboard shortcut, select the object you want to copy, then press the command and c button on your keyboard to copy. Then press the command button and v button on your keyboard.

Finally, you can adjust the size of your snowflake by adjusting the handles.

2. Spread the Snowflakes to the Whole Slide

If you want it to look like an animated snow background for PowerPoint, you need to spread the design to the whole background.

Once you like the snowflake pattern, select all the snowflakes. Click in the corner of the slide and drag the mouse to cause a grey box to appear. Drag the box across all of your snowflakes to select them.

Next, press Command + C on your keyboard. Next, press Command + V to paste. Now, all of the snowflakes in that area should be copied. Move the copies to where you want them.

Repeat this step as much as needed to cover your background.

Add Animation to Your Snowflakes

After creating the snowflake, you’ll need to create your animated snow background for PowerPoint. Here’s how to animate your snowflakes.

1. Add the Animation Effect

Select the big snowflakes by holding down the command key and clicking on the big snowflakes on your snow PowerPoint background. Next, click on the Animations tab above the toolbar.

In the toolbar, you’ll see an Exit Effects button. Click on it. When you click on the Exit Effects button, a menu drops down. Choose the Float Out option.

Next, click on the Animation Pane button in the toolbar. Click on the Timing field. For the first set, make the timing five seconds. Next, add animation to the rest of the snowflakes by repeating this step for different-sized snowflakes and changing each group’s timing. If you want to preview your animation, click on the Preview button in the toolbar.

2. Adjust your Effects

If you want it to look like continual snowflakes falling, click on the Repeat field and choose the Until the End of Slide option. To make your animated snow falling PowerPoint background realistic, make the bigger snowflakes move faster than the small snowflakes.

Whether you’re making an animated snow background for PowerPoint or adding any animation to PowerPoint, these helpful tips will make sure your slide looks professional:

1. Guide the Eye

Use your animation to draw the eye to the essential part of your slide. For example, if the most important information is at the top of the slide, then choose an animation that calls attention to the top of the slide.

You also should consider how your audience will read your slide. This means that you can add animation to the important content and nothing to the content that isn’t as important.

2. Consider Sound Effects

If you want to add sound effects, it’s okay, but you should add mild sound effects to make your presentation look professional. Some mild sound effects are the whoosh and the click.

When adding sound effects, consider your subject matter as well. For example, don’t add a bomb sound effect when discussing war veterans. This can be seen as tacky and unprofessional.

3. Be Consistent

When choosing what animations you want to add to your slides, remember it is best to be consistent. Stick to two or three types of animation throughout your slideshow.

For example, don’t make your title enter from the left, your subtitle enters from the right, and the rest of your text pop in. This is too much animation on one slide. Also, you should make the animations throughout your presentation consistent. For example, if you make your title pop in, then make your title pop in for every slide.

5. Budget Your Time

When you’re creating your presentation, leave enough time to add effects. You don’t want to have nice effects and then run out of time because your effects took too long.

It’s best if you don’t have your effects happening the whole time you are discussing the slide. If you want to do several different animations, it’s okay. Just make sure there is a little break. If you constantly have animation going while discussing your slide, it can be distracting to the audience.
