What You'll Learn in This Procreate Star Brush Tutorial
- How to make a star brush in Procreate
- How to use a star brush in Procreate
1. How to Make a Star Brush in Procreate
Step 1
In this star brush Procreate tutorial, I'm using an iPad Pro, an Apple Pencil, and the Procreate 5.2 app.
To begin, open up Procreate and tap the + icon in the top-right corner. This will create a new canvas, which you will need to do in order to access the Brush Library. Once your canvas is open, tap on the brush icon at the top right of the screen. This will open up the Brush Library.
Step 2
To create a new brush, tap the + icon in the top-right corner of the Brush Library menu.
This will open up the Brush Studio and create a new brush with Procreate's default settings.
Step 3
First, we are going to change the shape of the brush to a star. To do this, we need to edit the Shape Source. Click on the Shape section of the menu to the left of the screen, and then tap the Edit button.
Step 4
This will bring up the Shape Editor menu. Next, tap the Import button in the top-right corner.
Step 5
You can use any of the available Image source options to import your preferred star shape. In this tutorial, we are going to be using the Source Library. This contains a variety of pre-installed brush shapes.
Step 6
Search for "Star" in the search bar in the top right of the Source Library. Tap on the Star shape that appears to select it as the brush shape.
The star shape will now replace the default circle in the Shape Editor view. Press Done to save the changes.
The shape will now be applied to your brush and appear in the Shape Source box.
Step 7
Now it's time to edit the rest of the brush settings. In this tutorial, we are going to leave a lot of these on their default settings, but anything circled in red has been adjusted.
First, head to the Stroke path section of the menu on the left. We are going to increase the stroke Spacing to Max. The Spacing sets the number of times the brush shape will be stamped along a path; the larger the spacing, the more space between the stamps. For a stamp brush, you want this to be very large so that you only place down one shape at a time.
You can test out the brush as you go along using the Drawing Pad on the right side of the screen. To clear the pad, tap on Drawing Pad and then Clear drawing pad at the top of the menu.
Step 8
Next, we are going to head to the Apple Pencil section of the menu. We are going to drag the Opacity slider under the Pressure heading to None, which means that the opacity of the shape won't be affected by the amount of pressure applied to the brush.
Step 9
We are then going to head to the Properties section of the menu. We are going to increase the Preview size to 49%, which affects the size of the brush stamp preview in the Brush Library menu.
Then we are going to set the Smudge slider to None. This adjusts how much the brush smudges when it is set as the Smudge tool.
We are going to change the Maximum size to Max and the Minimum size to None. These set the upper and lower size limits that the brush can reach when adjusting the size using the size slider on the left sidebar.
Step 10
Next, you can use the About this brush section of the menu to name your new brush. The name can be found at the top right of the screen (circled in red) and can be edited by tapping on it.
You can also add your name and signature in the section below this, which helps you to retain credit for the brush if you plan to share it with others.
The brush is now ready to go! You can now test it out on your canvas and use the sliders on the left to adjust the size (top slider) and opacity (bottom slider).
2. How to Use a Star Brush in Procreate
Next, we are going to look at an example of how to use a Procreate star stamp brush within a drawing.
Step 1
We are going to begin by adding a dark background to the drawing, to mimic the night-time.
Step 2
Next, select the colour for your star brush using the Colours tool in the top-right corner. In this example, we are going to use a bright white shade.
Step 3
Beginning with the largest stars, we are going to dot them around the canvas, varying the size of the brush slightly using the size slider.
Step 4
Finally, we are going to add some much smaller stars for variety and to create more depth to the drawing. This helps to mimic a more realistic night sky.
Now We're Finished!
Thank you for following this tutorial with me, and I hope you have lots of fun creating your own star brushes!
