A conversational update on what’s new in Telerik UI for .NET MAUI.
.NET Multi-platform App UI (.NET MAUI) is the next-generation cross-platform .NET technology stack. From a true shared single project, developers can use .NET MAUI to multi-target apps to run on mobile/desktop platforms—like iOS, Android, Windows, MacOS, Tizen and more. Years of engineering have helped .NET MAUI come a long way, and developers now enjoy solid tooling, along with a rich ecosystem for productivity.
Turns out, you and me happen to be in Dubai at the same time. We’re taking the elevators up at the Burj Khalifa—the tallest building in the world. At the ground floor, you run into me—a .NET MAUI enthusiast who wants to see developers be more productive with Telerik UI. You’ve questioned .NET MAUI and been hesitant about cross-platform developer tooling. We’re headed to the top of the Burj, but, with a few stops en route, I’ve got five minutes to answer about 15 of your rapid-fire questions, to try convince you. Let’s go!
What’s the State of .NET MAUI?
.NET MAUI as a platform has been out as Generally Available (GA) since May 2022—the fifth release since GA is available with stability improvements. Developer tooling for .NET MAUI has now graduated from Preview and is available in the release edition of Visual Studio (VS) 2022 17.3 on Window, thus inspiring developer confidence in cross-platform .NET development.
What Is Telerik UI for .NET MAUI?
Developers need UI ammunition to kick-start their cross-platform journey or to modernize applications. Telerik UI for .NET MAUI is the most comprehensive UI component library featuring rich performant UI that runs seamlessly on mobile/desktop.
What’s the State of Telerik UI for .NET MAUI?
Work on Telerik UI started during early days of .NET MAUI. After lots of engineering, collaboration with Microsoft and 14 Previews, fully supported Telerik UI for .NET MAUI 1.0.0 was out as GA with Day-Zero support for .NET MAUI. Since then, Telerik releases have come off the heels of .NET MAUI ones—the latest Telerik bits marked as 2.3.0 go with the latest .NET MAUI release 6.0.424.
Can I Work With the Latest Visual Studio?
Yes, indeed. With .NET MAUI tooling getting formal support in Visual Studio 2022 17.3, developers will find Telerik tooling to be tightly integrated with the latest VS version.
How Does Telerik UI Work Inside Visual Studio?
It’s not just UI—developer experience is often driven by VS integrations. There is a whole Telerik Extension with .NET MAUI templates and a UI Toolbox.
I Keep Hearing About a Toolbox?
UI components in Telerik UI for .NET MAUI have been growing rapidly—thankfully, you do not need to keep count. They’re all tucked away nicely in a VS Toolbox for easy integration inside .NET MAUI XAML views.
But Wait—I’m on macOS
Albeit still in Preview, .NET MAUI support has come a long way for developers on macOS—the latest being Visual Studio 2022 for Mac 17.4 Preview 1. You’ll find Telerik UI for .NET MAUI working seamlessly with latest VS for Mac.
Can I Tinker With the .NET MAUI Visual Tree?
Developer productivity is boosted when being able to navigate to exact XAML that rendered part of the visual tree, while the app running. .NET MAUI now fully supports this with Live Visual Tree feature—works for all your Telerik UI as well.
Can I See My Code Changes While the .NET MAUI App Is Running?
Yes. With XAML Hot Reload and .NET Hot Reload, developer inner loop is that much faster with on-the-fly XAML/C# code edits—surprise, works for Telerik UI as well.
My Hot Reload Isn’t So Hot
Check your Hot Reload Settings in Visual Studio. While on by default, it is still a VS setting and you need to be running your apps in Debug mode.
What UI Components Will I Find in Telerik UI for .NET MAUI?
Telerik UI for .NET MAUI includes UI components that are intrinsically difficult to render natively across platforms—like data visualization, collection controls, editors, layouts and lot more. The controls are feature-rich, expose consistent APIs and work with MVVM design patterns—we’ve done the engineering so you can light up your app UI faster.
How Does Telerik Make Me More Productive With .NET MAUI?
Aside from the beautiful performant UI components, Telerik UI for .NET MAUI includes Document Processing Libraries—so developers can work with Word/Excel/PDF/other types of documents easily. Developers should not struggle including UI libraries—so documentation, blogs, videos and top-notch support are here to help.
Anything New With Telerik UI for .NET MAUI?
The latest release of Telerik UI for .NET MAUI includes a variety of pickers and consistent rendering of complex UI components across mobile/desktop, while catering to slightly different UX. Did I mention the new and cross-platform .NET MAUI DataGrid and variety of Charts—everything works seamlessly across platforms with full functionality.
Are There Any Demo Apps Where I Can See Telerik UI in Action?
Glad you asked. There are two in the respective app stores—a Controls Showcase and a Crypto Tracker App, both with code base open sourced. There is also an SDK Browser for developer-how-to scenarios. In short, don’t trust my words—take the demo apps for a spin to see Telerik UI in action.
I’m Sold. Where Can I Learn More About .NET MAUI?
There are plenty of learning resources around .NET MAUI—just do a search and maybe start with the .NET MAUI docs. Recently, .NET Conf Focus on MAUI happened—an all-day live-streamed event with plenty of awesome content and all the session recordings are online. A passionate developer community churning out tons of content is a healthy sign for .NET MAUI.
Looks like we’ve reached the top floor of the Burj Khalifa. I see a smile on your face—looks like you’re convinced and ready to dive into .NET MAUI. I also see a lounge—let’s go have a drink and explore the views of possibilities. Ciao.
