How to Crop in Affinity Designer

Don’t let the vector nature of Affinity Designer fool you—it can handle raster image editing as well, besides a vector shape, a group of objects, or a line of text.

One of the most useful features is the Vector Crop Tool, which can be used to crop an image in Affinity Designer very easily. In this tutorial, I will be walking you through that process. It’s simply a matter of using the Vector Crop Tool to manually adjust the crop of your image, then copying and pasting the cropped image as a new document. Then, from there, you can export it. Let’s elaborate!

What You Will Learn in This Affinity Designer Crop Tutorial

  • How to open an image in Affinity Designer
  • How to use the Affinity Designer Vector Crop Tool
  • How to crop in Affinity Designer
  • How to export the newly cropped image

1. How to Open Your Image in Affinity Designer

Before you can crop an image in Affinity Designer, you first need an image to work with that needs cropping. Go to File > Open to locate your image on your hard drive and open it.

For this demonstration, I will be using these violet flowers from Envato Elements.

2. Where Is the Affinity Designer Vector Crop Tool?

Locate the Vector Crop Tool in your toolbar. It looks like a white box with a slash going through it. Its location is somewhere in the middle of the toolbar.

Now, let’s see this handy tool in action and learn how to cut an image in Affinity Designer.

3. How to Crop an Image in Affinity Designer

Step 1

Click on your image with the Vector Crop Tool to select it. Once it’s selected, you should notice vertical and horizontal edges along with little blue handles in the corners of your image. Simply click and drag on the handles to adjust the crop of your image.

  • You can hold Shift on your keyboard if you need to lock the proportions at any point.
  • If you want your Affinity Designer crop to be done to a specific size, make sure to pay attention to the Width and Height values that are visible on the screen.

Step 2

Once you’re happy with the crop of your image, we can go ahead and save it.

To do this, while the image stays selected, go to Edit > Copy. Then, paste it as a new image by going to File > New From Clipboard. Pasting your image into a new document allows you to export it at its cropped dimensions.

Note that the image still contains the vector mask nested to it, so you can always recover the original image data by either dragging the crop handles (with the Vector Crop Tool) or deleting the crop mask entirely.

In case you want to get rid of the mask (and the hidden crop data), right-click the layer in the Layers panel and select Rasterise…

4. Export Your New Copped Image

All you have to do now is export this new document. To do this, go to File > Export to bring up the Export Settings window.

If you’re exporting an image (as opposed to a vector design) then it is recommended that you choose either PNG or JPEG format as those are most suitable for images.

Your newly cropped image is now ready to be used in other projects!
