What You'll Need
For this Procreate duplicate drawing tutorial, we used this cute illustration set from Envato Elements:
1. How to Duplicate a Layer in Procreate
Step 1
First, let's learn how to duplicate a layer in Procreate. For demonstration purposes, I've put together a composition of three elements from our 'Summer Duck Pond' file.
Open the Layers menu, located in the top-right corner of your screen, and select the layer you wish to duplicate. Once you have selected a layer, it will be highlighted in blue.
Here, I've selected the 'Flower' layer.
Step 2
Next, slide the selected 'Flower' layer to the left. This will reveal three actions to choose from: Lock, Duplicate, and Clear. Tap the Duplicate action.
Step 3
Once you tap Duplicate, it will automatically create an exact copy of the layer on top of the originally selected layer, and the new layer will be given the same name.
2. How to Duplicate a Selection in Procreate
Now, let's learn how to quickly duplicate a selection or how to duplicate something on Procreate that is on a layer, rather than being the layer itself. Here is another scene I've created for this lesson.
Step 1
Make sure you are on the proper layer.
To duplicate an element or object, grab the Selection Tool, the 'S' icon on the top-left toolbar in Procreate.
Then tap the Freehand selection in the options menu below. Freehand will allow you to manually trace over the area you want. So select the area you would like to duplicate in your scene. You will notice that a grey circle and a dotted line appear once the selection is made around the object.
Step 2
Now, to duplicate the selection, first head over to the top-left corner and tap the Actions tab (wrench icon) to open the menu.
Then, select Add from the drop-down menu.
Step 3
Within the drop-down Add menu, you will first tap Copy, then Paste, to paste the selection.
Step 4
This copy-and-paste action will automatically duplicate the selection on its own layer!
Open the Layers menu, from the top-right corner of the screen. You will see the duplicated selection on its own layer, highlighted in blue. This technique also works to duplicate a shape in Procreate.
Congratulations, You Can Duplicate!
Great, you did it! You know how to duplicate layers in Procreate, as well as selections in your designs. You can now have fun using this knowledge to duplicate text, drawings, shapes, layers, or something else in Procreate.
