How to Make a Marble Texture in Photoshop
Step 1
There are multiple ways to learn how to create a marble texture in Photoshop, but here we'll learn a quick and easy technique.
Create a New Document in Photoshop. Set the canvas values to a Width and Height of 2048 px. Make sure Resolution is set to 72, Color Mode to RGB Color, and Background Contents is set to White, and then press Create.
If you need a high-resolution marble texture, just change the value of the Resolution to 300 pixels/inch.
Step 2
We will be using the Clouds filter to make a white marble texture, so we need to make sure the Default Foreground/Background colors are set in the Tools panel. The shortcut key is D.
Open the Layers panel, Windows > Layers. With the layer selected, click Filter > Render > Clouds.
Step 3
Next, we need to render another layer of clouds, so Create a New Layer from the Layers panel, and then click Filter > Render > Clouds.
Step 4
With Layer 2 selected, click Filter > Render > Difference Clouds to give a grainy effect.
Repeat the same filter on Layer 1, using the shortcut Repeat Last Action (Command-Option-F).
Step 5
Head over and select Layer 2 again, and then select Image > Adjustment > Levels (Command-L).
Drag the Highlight pointer toward the middle, and then drag the Midtone pointer toward the shadow pointer, as shown in the image below. Press OK. This will make our grain work appear more and brighten our marble image.
Repeat the same Levels adjustment action to Layer 1.
Step 6
Head back to Layer 2, and let's transform its rotation. Edit > Transform > Rotate 180°.
Then, from the Layers panel, set the Blend Mode of the layer to Screen.
Step 7
Now let's select parts of the marble grain to which we can apply some gold foil effects.
Go to Select > Color Range. Select Midtones and experiment with the Range pointers until you see a fair number of areas selected, and then press OK.
Step 8
With the selection active on the layer, go to the Layers panel and Create a New Layer.
Go to Edit > Fill. Apply a White fill to the contents. Then Select > Deselect (Command-D) to deselect the selected area.
Step 9
Now, let's step it up with some golden effects for a luxurious texture.
Create a New Layer from the Layers panel.
File > Place Embedded... and select a gold foil texture to place onto the layer, and then Scale to fit onto the canvas. I chose to work with gold texture #10.
Step 10
With the gold layer selected, go to Layer > Create Clipping Mask. Beautiful!
Step 11
To finish our tutorial on how to create a marble effect in Photoshop, let's apply a color to the grey area to give the texture a softer look. Marble comes in various natural colors, the most common color being white. Yet there are a number of color variations within its textures we can try out like blue-grey, yellow-brown, pink, and others. We are going to complement the gold with a blue color tone.
Make sure you are on Layer 2. Go to Image > Adjustments > Gradient Map. Click on the Gradient Map mapping bar to open the Gradient Editor panel so that we can edit our color.
Step 12
To adjust our color, click on the left Color Stop pointer. This adjusts our dark areas on the marble texture.
Click the Color to open the Color Picker panel. Set the color to any dark shade of blue. I set it to #0b2a67
. Then press OK in the Color Picker, Gradient Editor, and Gradient Map panels.
