How ChatGPT is changing the way we work, think and study.

Before you start reading the article, let me be honest with you: I was feeling pretty saturated with writing tutorials. So, I decided to jump on the bandwagon (better late than never) and share my opinions on why everyone is so hyped up about ChatGPT. I believe it’s not just another tech trend that will dissipate in a few months. ChatGPT is already here and changing the way we work. And it’s not just developers who should be wary — with the potential to replace just about every job out there, ChatGPT is set to revolutionize the workforce as we know it.

The term ‘Artificial Intelligence’ is not new to any of us. It has been around for a decade, but until recently, it was just a marketing term used by many companies to attract venture capital funding. Even GPT has been in development for half a decade, but why is it now getting so much attention? The answer is accessibility. OpenAI made the GPT model available to just about everyone at the end of 2022, and nobody saw it coming. While previous models were not as reliable or efficient as GPT-3.5 Turbo or GPT-4, the accessibility of ChatGPT sets it apart from its predecessors.

ChatGPT is just the beginning of a new renaissance, and now the common man has tasted the power of artificial intelligence. I used the term ChatGPT to optimize my article for search engine algorithms, but there are many similar tools that will emerge in the future. My opinions encompass not only the current tools available but also those that will become available in the foreseeable future.

While much of the discussion around AI focuses on its potential to replace current jobs, one of the biggest domains that will be impacted by AI is often overlooked — Education. The first version of Windows was launched in 1985, and in less than 40 years, we have machines capable of building a brand new operating system by themselves. We have come a long way, but the education system, particularly in countries like India where I come from, remains largely unchanged for ages.

“I think that technology advancements, you cannot try to ignore it or try to avoid it, it’s happening and it’s just like water. You cannot block it. You have to go with it.” —Dr. Li Jiang, Director of Stanford AIRE Program

The current education system often prioritizes conformity and memorization, treating students more like robots than individuals with unique talents and skills. Ironically, while humans are being trained to become more like machines, AI is being developed to mimic human behavior and decision-making. However, I believe that both humans and AI have their unique strengths and limitations, and neither can fully replace the other.

Education institutions, known for their rigid nature, have started blocking tools like ChatGPT instead of adapting and changing the teaching framework. This is sheer stupidity. Just like any other productivity tools, these intelligent tools should be used as supplements to one’s workflow in order to improve efficiency and creativity. Avoiding them will ultimately whip you back in the competition.

How to survive the AI era?

I have struggled as a student throughout my life because I am not good at memorization. In my country, it is not widely accepted to write answers based on your own understanding of a particular topic in your own words. This has made it difficult for me to learn, as I cannot simply memorize information. I need to visually experience a topic or build something in order to truly understand it. It is frustrating that the current education system does not cater to different learning styles and instead expects everyone to learn in the same way.

AI excels at processing vast amounts of data, recognizing patterns and making predictions. On the other hand, humans have a unique ability to understand emotions, think creatively and innovate. By using AI in an ethical way, humans can enhance their skills and improve their work efficiency. For instance, AI can be a powerful tool for individuals who struggle with expressing their ideas in writing. For students like me, who find it challenging to learn by memorization and prefer a more hands-on approach, AI can provide a personalized learning experience by breaking down complex topics into smaller, more manageable components. Therefore, AI can complement human capabilities and help us achieve more in our personal and professional lives.

In order to survive the era of AI, people must:

  • Know how AI works.
  • Differentiate between the abilities of AI and humans.
  • Know how to work with AI.
  • Learn the ethics of AI.

Will AI render humans useless in the future?

If you had told anyone, including me, three years ago that we would soon have access to technology capable of answering virtually any question in a personalized manner, I wouldn’t have believed you. It’s amazing to see how rapidly the field of AI is developing, and it’s impossible to predict what new advances will be made in the coming years.

However, regardless of how advanced our technology becomes, it’s important to remember one of the key lessons of stoicism: to focus on the things that are within our control rather than those that aren’t. While we may not be able to control the pace of technological advancement, we can control how we choose to interact with and utilize these tools to improve our lives and achieve our goals.

The launch of ChatGPT is a wake-up call for everyone. Big tech is coming, and it is coming fast. As I mentioned before, while AI excels in processing data and performing repetitive tasks, it lacks the creative and innovative thinking that humans are inherently good at. It’s time for the old ways to make way for the new.

If we continue to cling to outdated methods of learning, teaching, and working, we will struggle to keep up with the pace of technological progress. But if we embrace a new framework that incorporates AI, there has never been a better time to be alive. It is important to acknowledge that while AI will change the nature of work and potentially replace some of the current jobs, it will also create new job opportunities which we may not have even imagined yet.

Of course, like any technology, AI has its flaws, and there are concerns about its impact on society. However, I don’t believe that halting research and development is the solution. If we had let concerns about cybercrime and other negative effects stop us from advancing the internet, we would not have reaped the tremendous benefits that it has brought us today.

“A 6 month moratorium is not a practical proposal. To advance AI safety, regulations around transparency and auditing would be more practical and make a bigger difference.” — Andrew Ng

Final thoughts

These were my thoughts on the potential impact of technologies such as GPT and Stable Diffusion (and others) on the world, and the importance of adapting to these changes instead of resisting them. It will be interesting to see how these technologies continue to develop and shape the future. Thank you for reading this article, and I welcome your thoughts and opinions on the topic of AI.

A video I recommend everyone to watch.
