Let’s learn how to speed ramp in Premiere Pro!

How to speed ramp in Premiere Pro (Step by step)

Learning how to speed ramp in Premiere is quite simple. Remember: you can add a speed ramp to any clip that you are editing.

To demonstrate, we’ll use a stock video clip from Envato. It’s called Slow Motion of a Racing Car Sliding on an Ice Track, and you can download it here to follow along with our tutorial.

Now, let’s look at how to do speed ramping in Premiere Pro.

1. Add the Ramp Effect to a clip

To add speed ramp Premiere Pro effects, begin by choosing a clip to speed ramp. For this example, we’ll use the clip on the V1 video track.

With the clip added, it’s helpful to expand the height of the V1 track in the Timeline. To do that, hover over the line between V1 and V2. Then, click and drag upward. The track will get taller. This way, you’ll be able to see the effects that you’re adding.

Find the fx icon on the clip in the Timeline. Right-click on fx. Then, hover over Time Remapping, and then choose Speed

Right-click on the fx icon, then choose Time Remapping > Speed.

When you do, notice the horizontal bar on the clip. This is the Premiere Pro speed ramp effect.

2. Choose where to begin the speed ramp

Click and drag the Playhead to the frame where you want to start your speed ramp. The Playhead is the vertical blue bar in the Timeline. You can preview the frame above the Timeline, in the Program Monitor. There, you’ll see your video previewed in real time.

To choose where to begin the speed ramp, move your cursor over the horizontal line on the Timeline clip. Then, hold down the Command key on Mac, or the Control key on Windows. Click on the spot where the Playhead and speed ramp line intersect.

3. Select the speed for the ramp

Now, let’s select the speed for your speed ramping. To do that, hover over the speed ramping line on your clip. Be sure that you’re to the right of your chosen start point.

Then, pull up or down to change the ramp speed. Going up boosts the speed; going down slows things down. A percentage indicator appears right below the clip to give you an idea of the speed ramping pace that you’re applying.

Drag the speed ramp line up or down to increase or decrease the speed.

When you’re happy with your chosen speed ramping Premiere Pro rate, release your cursor. The ramp effect is now applied.

4. Choose where to end the speed ramp

Finally, you’ll want to choose where to end your speed ramp. When you do, the speed will smoothly change from your chosen start to your chosen end point. Then, it will maintain the new level of speed throughout the remainder of the clip.

To end a speed ramp Premiere Pro effect, click and drag on the marker at your starting point. Move it to the right, until you find a spot where you want to end the ramp. Release it, and you’ll see a second marker appear.

Your speed ramp will now occur fully within the bounds of the two markers. You can always adjust these as you go to change up the pace of your speed ramping in Premiere Pro.
