How to Make Audio Waveform in Premiere Pro (Step by Step)

1. Create an After Effects Composition
With Adobe Premiere Pro open, find the Timeline. This panel sits in the lower center of your Premiere Pro window. Here, you’ll control the spacing and timing of all multimedia in your video.
Audio waveform visualization can't be done with Premiere Pro by itself. That’s where Adobe After Effects–a powerful companion app–comes in. However, audio waveform visualizer After Effects designs can be added to your Premiere Pro projects.
To do that, click on your audio track in the Timeline. Then, hold down the Shift key on your keyboard. Now, click on the video track.
Next, right-click. From the list of options, choose Replace With After Effects Composition. When you do, Adobe After Effects will launch.
A window will appear, asking you to name your After Effects project. Give it a name, and choose Save.
2. Build a Waveform Effect with a Solid Background
After Effects is now open. You can start building an audio waveform visualizer in After Effects. To begin, you’ll need to draw a solid background shape.
Find the Layer dropdown menu at the very top of your screen. Click it, then choose New > Solid. The color itself doesn’t matter, so choose one and then click OK on the Solid Settings menu that opens.
At the bottom of the screen, you’ll see a view similar to Premiere’s Timeline. At the top, a layer is added for your new solid background. Click on this, and then right-click.
On the menu that appears, find the Effect category.
Hover over Effect, and then over the Generate group. From the list of options it contains, choose Audio Waveform. An audio waveform is now added and ready to customize.
3. Layer Audio and Specify the Waveform Effect Settings
When you click on the Audio Waveform effect, it'll appear in the Effect Controls in the upper left corner. You now can specify custom settings that control the look of your waveform in Premiere Pro!
Begin at the top. In the Audio Layer group, open the dropdown. From it, click to select the audio file that you have in your project.
Otherwise, the audio waveform in Adobe Premiere won’t be visible by default.
Below, you can make an array of optional adjustments to your waveform effect. By default it's pink and purple, but you can change the colors. You can also control when the effects start, stop, and more.
When you’re finished making these adjustments, jump back over to the Adobe Premiere Pro waveform visualizer.
4. Preview an Adobe Premiere Audio Waveform
Go back to the audio waveform visualizer in Premiere Pro. Watch the video preview in the Program Monitor in the upper center of your screen.
As you play back your video, you’ll see a sleek audio waveform effect play. As your music or background audio plays, you’ll see the waveforms stylishly appear right on the video.
