As mentioned, CapCut is most often used on mobile devices like phones or tablets, and while it also works on desktop computers, you’ll typically find yourself using CapCut on the same device that you film videos with! So your clips themselves may come right from your phone.

You could also have video files stored on your device. That’s what we’ll work with.. To demonstrate, I’ll be using a beautiful stock video clip from Envato Elements. You can download it here if you’d like to follow along.

Secondly, your CapCut multimedia content will often include audio. No video is complete without sound! These can be music, spoken word, audio effects, and more. For these, you’ll rely on CapCut’s vast, built-in content library.

How to Import Audio and Video into CapCut: Step by Step

Importing audio and video into CapCut is a quick, easy process, I’ll demonstrate on an iPhone using iOS 17. You can also install CapCut from the Google Play Store, or onto your Mac or Windows computer. 

1. Create a Project

Video and audio in CapCut form the key inputs to your completed productions. CapCut organizes multimedia like this into projects. Think of a project as a working file that groups audio, video, and effects together. The first step to importing audio and video into CapCut is to create a new project.

Navigate to the Edit tab in CapCut. Then, choose New project.

Begin by opening CapCut on your device. At the bottom of your screen, you’ll see five menu tabs. They’re labeled Edit, Templates, Library, Inbox, and Me. The first option is the one to choose when you want to import. Tap Edit to make it the active tab.

On the Edit view, find the blue New project box at the top of your screen. This will create a new project to work with in CapCut. If you’ve already created projects in the app, they will be listed below. 

2. Select Videos to Import

Tap on the New project box. When you do, your Camera Roll (image library) will open. You’ll see thumbnails for all video files that you have saved. Scroll through and tap to select one or more videos. 

Once you have these selected, press Add in the lower right corner of your screen. This will kick off the import process. In seconds, you’ll be taken to the main CapCut editing workspace.

Tap on one or more video thumbnails to add them. Press Add when you’ve made your selections.

Down at the bottom of your screen, notice the Timeline view. It looks like a filmstrip, and it is where CapCut organizes your video clips. Think of it as the central location for storing and sequencing media in CapCut. 

3. Add Audio Tracks

Once you have your videos imported into CapCut, it’s time to add audio as well. One thing that makes CapCut stand out is the array of included audio effects. For example, you can choose from a large variety of engaging music. Plus, you can choose from a collection of sound effects. And you can even record your own voiceovers!

To add audio in CapCut, look below your Timeline. At the bottom of your screen, you’ll see the main toolbar menu. On it are many menu buttons. You’ll see Edit, Captions, Filters, Effects, and more. The second option from the left is the one you need: Audio. Go ahead and tap to select it.

When you press Audio, the Audio menu panel will launch. On it, you’ll see the bottom menu replaced with new options. Here are some of the key ones to keep in mind:

  • Sounds. Here, you’ll find music and other sounds to add to your videos. It’s a great resource, with many licensed song choices to pick from. You can also import saved audio files from your device.
  • Extract. With the Extract panel, you can pull audio from video clips that you have saved in your library. It’s a good choice if you’ve recorded audio yourself.
  • Voiceover. On the Voiceover tab, you can record your own narration. After, you can add effects to make sure it sounds perfect in your video.
  • Sound FX. These are sound effects. Need cheering? Want fireworks sound effects? All those and more are available here.

For example, you can open Sounds by pressing it. Inside is a searchable library of music! Browse through and find a song that you’d like to use. Then, tap it to add it to your video. It’s really that easy.

No matter what type of sounds you need to add, CapCut has you covered. Browse for an audio effect, tap it, and it will be added to your project instantly.
