How to make reaction videos on CapCut

Reaction videos are a great way to weigh in with your thoughts and emotions. With the CapCut video editor, it’s easy to make reactions that are shareable to social. And you can do it right from your phone! Let’s learn how.

What is a reaction video?

So what is a reaction video, anyway? You might have heard the term before—and you might even have watched one. In essence, a reaction video shows people reacting to other content. That may be viral videos. It might be films. Or it might just show them listening to music.

As content creators, we love to engage with our audience. It’s how we expand networks and make new connections. Reaction videos are the perfect method. They allow us to share our reactions with others.

Why use CapCut to make reaction videos?

Using CapCut to make reaction videos is a great idea. In fact, it’s hard to imagine a more efficient workflow. As a wildly popular video editor, CapCut gives you the tools you need to create a reaction video on any topic.

  • It’s targeted towards social media. CapCut is made by ByteDance, the creators of TikTok. Social media sharing is the main focus of the app. In seconds, you can directly share your reaction video to TikTok, Instagram, and more.
  • You can carry CapCut anywhere. Although desktop versions are available, CapCut is geared towards mobile editing. That makes it completely portable and ready to use whenever you want to film a reaction video. Your phone has a camera, so you’re literally always carrying the tools you need.

CapCut has a powerful platform for reaction videos. Now, let’s walk through how to use it to create your own reaction videos.

How to make reaction videos on CapCut (step by step)

Making a reaction video in CapCut is easy and doesn’t take much time. That’s thanks to the versatility of mobile editing. We’ll demonstrate using CapCut on an iOS device. You can also download the free app from the Google Play Store. Plus, there are desktop versions for Mac and Windows, if you prefer editing on a computer.

You’ll also see stock video clips in use. Both are sourced from the vast Envato Elements library, and you can download them below:

Without further delay, let’s learn how to make reaction videos on CapCut in a few easy steps.

1. Record your reaction and import the footage

The first step to making a reaction video is to record your reactions. You don’t need CapCut for this. You can do one of two things:

  • You can record yourself on your mobile device, using the camera app.
  • You can record yourself with a camera and then save the video file to your mobile device.

Either way, keep in mind how a reaction video works: you’re filming yourself. It’s a good idea to invest in a professional mic to capture clear sound. And don’t forget to focus on the light. Inexpensive ring lights can really help improve the quality of your reaction videos.

Once you’ve recorded a video, go ahead and launch CapCut on your device. When you have the app open, take a look at the bottom of the screen. You’ll see five menu options: Edit, Templates, Library, Inbox, and Me. For your CapCut reaction video, you can choose Edit by tapping on it.

Now, it’s time to import the reaction video that you recorded. At the top of the Edit panel is the New project button. It’s in a blue box with a + icon. Tap the + icon and a project will be created for you. Think of a project as a working file for a given video. It’s where you import, store, and edit multimedia into a finished movie.

Import videoImport videoImport video
In CapCut, choose New project, and then select your reaction video footage. Tap Add to import it.

When you create a project, your Camera Roll opens. Here, browse to the video that you recorded for the reaction video. Tap on its thumbnail to select it. Notice that the Add button in the lower right corner is illuminated in blue.

Choose Add with your video selected. CapCut will get to work importing your video footage. Most reaction videos are short, so it shouldn’t take too long. Once it finishes, the video appears onscreen. You’re ready to start editing!

2. Apply edits and effects in CapCut

Take a few moments now to familiarize yourself with CapCut’s layout. At the top is a video preview. Immediately below this is the Timeline. With the Timeline, you can move through your video frame by frame. It’s also where you can control multiple clip videos, rearrange media, and more.

Below the Timeline, at the bottom of your screen, is the CapCut toolbar. Here is the heart and soul of CapCut. On this toolbar is where you’ll find all of the edits, effects, and features that CapCut has to offer.

On the left is the Edit button. Press it to open the editing options. Now, here it’s important to know what edits are. Think of them as corrections and adjustments. Effects, on the other hand, are optional style designs. Let’s tackle edits first.

Here, I’ve made a variety of edits to this CapCut reaction video.

With the Edit panel open, explore your options. They’re many, and varied! For example, you can split one clip into two or more clips. You can adjust the clip speed, choosing to fast-forward or add slow motion.

You can even add animations and filters. And with Adjustments, you can make visual improvements. These include things like changing the brightness or sharpening the clip. In the image above, you can see many of these at work.

There’s no perfect combination of edits. The choices are fully up to you. Keep your goal in mind: a clear, crisp, easy-to-watch video that looks amazing on screen.

When you’re finished making edits, tap the back arrow on the lower left corner of CapCut’s toolbar. This collapses the Edit panel and takes you back to the main view. Scroll to the right to explore more options.

CapCut effectsCapCut effectsCapCut effects
Return to the toolbar to add audio, text, and video effects and styles to your CapCut reaction video.

You can add music by tapping Audio, and captions by choosing Text. And by launching the Effects panel, you’ll open up a whole new world of possibilities. With video effects in CapCut, you can add bold visual styles to every clip. Want a blur? Need your clip to twirl? Want HDR effects? All of that and more can be found on the Effects panel.

Browse your options and tap on any of the effects that you’d like to add. In moments, you can create a truly one-of-a-kind reaction video using CapCut.

3. Optional: Include a second video

There are really two styles of reaction video. With either type, you’ll show yourself reacting to other content. In some cases, you may want to show that content as part of your video. This can be done with an overlay—in essence, picture-in-picture. Or you can opt simply to show your own video while directing your audience toward another video, if you’re reacting to a second clip.

If you want to add an overlay of the clip you’re reacting to, go back to the toolbar again. This time, choose Overlay from the menu of options. Then, select Add overlay.

OverlayOverlayOverlay
With the Overlay menu, you can include the clip that you reacted to.

Once again, your Camera Roll will open. Repeat the same import process as before, this time choosing the second video.

When you import the second video, it will be placed on top of your reaction video. Drag on the corners with your fingers to shrink it down. Then, move it into place. Keep it large enough to be visible, but small enough to ensure you aren’t obscured. That’s all it takes!

Be careful here: many online videos are copyrighted. Never include someone else’s work without permission.

4. Export and share your reaction video online

You’ve edited and produced your next viral reaction video in CapCut. Now, all that’s left is to export and share it with the world. In CapCut, this is an effortless process.

In the top right corner of your CapCut screen, locate the Share button. Tap it once, and you’re underway.

CapCut will get to work exporting your reaction video. When it is finished, you’ll have a saved copy of your video on your device. It’s ready to share, send to your friends, or post online.

Share videoShare videoShare video
Tap Share, and your CapCut reaction video will be saved directly to your device. You can also use the sharing buttons to post directly to your favorite social media channels.

Remember how I mentioned that CapCut lets you share directly to your favorite social media apps? You’ll find those options right here as well. Front and center is the Share to TikTok option. If you tap on it, you can log into your TikTok profile and post your video directly to it. It only takes a few seconds.

Below are additional social networks: Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, and more. Each logo is a sharing button for that social network. This is the easiest and fastest way to get your CapCut reaction in front of your audience. Post it directly to your socials and get ready to watch your views skyrocket.
