It’s quite amazing just how dead Twitter is in my follows. It’s a real ghost town over there. Now I get more engagement from a few on Mastodon and nothing from thousands on Twitter. Twitter is dead. Like super dead.
I joined Mastodon with uncertainty last April. It’s taken me a while but I’ve started sharing more than my latest blogs. I had fallen off Twitter long before Elmo bought it. I wasn’t sure if I wanted back in on social media. Mastodon seems OK for now!
Good Listens
I recently listened to two audiobooks about Twitter:
- Extremely Hardcore: Inside Elon Musk’s Twitter by Zoë Schiffer
- Battle for the Bird by Kurt Wagner
Battle for the Bird is largely about Jack Dorsey as a cult leader. Elmo’s circus makes an appearance in the later chapters. I’d recommend Schiffer’s book for the inside stories which are more entertaining. Both books are insightful and confirm my theory; Twitter is dead.
According to Twitter my account was created Apr 9, 2009, 6:08:45 PM. Fifteen years I used the service for (mostly) professional stuff. I found employment, clients, associates, and other opportunities to forward my career. Shame it’s dead. It’s easy to laugh and criticise Twitter now but I found it a useful tool.
I suspect my account will be suspended soon. Twitter are trying to force me to add a date of birth. I guess Elmo needs to sell more data to recoup his $40 billion? I had the foresight to delete all my tweets long ago. I could delete my account too but big tech never really deletes data they only hide it from you.
I have removed twitter meta tags from my source code. I’ve also removed all links to Twitter. Most of those I checked had rotted and the rest redirect to a login page.
