How to create a highlight reel in CapCut (step by step)
For this tutorial, I’ll be using CapCut on an Apple iPhone. Other platforms are available, as mentioned earlier. You can download CapCut for Android devices, or Mac and Windows PCs.
You’ll see three stock video clips in use as you learn how to create a highlight reel in CapCut. All three can be found on Envato Elements. Download them here, here, and here if you want to follow along.
Let’s dive in.
1. Add and compile your video footage
The first step in creating a CapCut highlight reel is to import your video footage. Highlight reels will need one or more video clips to shine. When you open CapCut, you’ll see four menu options across the bottom: Edit, Templates, Inbox, and Me.
Tap Edit in the lower left corner. This takes you to CapCut’s Project view. Get started on your highlight reel by tapping the blue New project button at the top. When you choose New project, your device’s Camera Roll will open.
Scroll through and find videos that you want to import. Tap on the circle in the upper right of each video thumbnail to select them.
When you’ve chosen your video clips, tap the blue Add button in the lower right corner. CapCut will import your footage, and you’re ready to get started.
2. Trim clips for a short and sweet highlight reel
If there’s a single rule about CapCut highlight reels, it’s this: keep them short and sweet. After all, it’s a highlight reel - not a full portfolio. You’ll want to include only the top scenes from any video clip.
When you import your footage, you’ll be on CapCut’s main Edit view. In the upper center, you’ll see the first video you chose previewed. Whenever you make edits, you’ll see them previewed in real time here.
Below the preview is the Timeline. The Timeline controls the timing and sequence of your CapCut videos. You can rearrange clips and make other adjustments. One such adjustment is the ability to trim clips. This way, you can show only key scenes from each video without having to play back the entire clip. Think of trimming videos as the equivalent of cropping a still image. You’re removing excess detail to focus only on what you want.
Here’s how to trim clips. Begin by tapping on the first clip on the Timeline. When you do, you’ll see white handles appear on each end. You can drag these left or right to trim a video. Again, it’s like cropping: position the handles on either end of what you want to see. The excess video will be deleted from your CapCut project.
3. Use transitions to move seamlessly from clip to clip
Once you’ve trimmed your clips, it’s time to focus on how to move between them. Scroll across your Timeline to where two clips meet. By default, CapCut will simply jump from one clip to the next.
While this is a workable option, it can appear jerky and choppy on-screen. Your best bet is to add a stylish transition from one clip to the next.
To add transitions, tap the white box that appears between two CapCut clips on your Timeline. This is the Transitions menu in CapCut, and you’ll see the panel open when you tap the button. When it does, you’re in CapCut’s Transitions gallery.
Scroll through the category tabs and browse the thumbnail transitions. Each one previews an effect in real time. To apply a transition, simply tap on the thumbnail. Now, you have a cool animated design to move from clip to clip. Repeat throughout your highlight reel Timeline to boost your styles.
4. Add text for extra clarity
Text is always optional in a highlight reel, but it can be a powerful add. With text overlays, you can add clarity, call attention to key details, and more. CapCut makes it simple to add text to your videos.
To add a text overlay, find CapCut’s toolbar. It’s the menu bar across the very bottom of your screen. The third option from left is Text, so go ahead and tap that button. Then, choose Add text from the new list of toolbar options.
When you tap Add text, a textbox will appear on your video canvas. Type in your text. When finished, tap the small Keyboard icon on the middle right. CapCut’s main Text panel will now be visible. Here, you can browse tabs like Fonts, Styles, and Effects to customize the text you’ve just added.
While it should be used sparingly, CapCut text can be a great addition to any highlight reel. Tap the Checkmark when you’re finished adding text to your video.
5. Apply style effects to enhance designs
Often, your amazing videos can stand alone without further edits. But sometimes, it helps to add cool style effects for added pizazz. Back on CapCut’s toolbar, you have two options to explore. Let’s begin with Effects by tapping on the Effects button.
When the Effects toolbar appears, choose Video effects. You’re now in the Effects gallery. Think of effects as visual edits that transform how a clip looks. For example, navigate to the Distortion effects and choose from one of the options by tapping its thumbnail. You’ll see a wild Vortex effect appear on your video clip!
Use these sparingly, as they can get distracting. But when used carefully, CapCut effects enhance your own videos and excite audiences with sleek graphics.
6. Don’t forget music
Last but not least, don’t forget music! No CapCut highlight reel is truly complete without a soundtrack. And thanks to the built-in music library, you don’t have to go far to find the right songs.
To add music in CapCut, return once again to the toolbar. This time, find the Audio button. It’s second from left. Tap Audio, and from the toolbar options, choose Sounds on the far left side.
CapCut’s music menus will launch. You have virtually unlimited options to explore. By default, you’ll find yourself on the TikTok sounds panel. Here, you can log into your TikTok and choose music from there. But you’ll also see menu tabs across the center of your screen.
Your audio lets you import a saved audio file on your device. Recommended offers up suggested tracks that fit your content. And by tapping the Commercial tab in the upper right corner, you’ll be taken to CapCut’s vast included music library.
Browse through songs, or search for one. When you find a track you want, tap on it, then choose the blue + icon on the right. Instantly, the song will drop onto your CapCut Timeline. It’s ready for sharing in your highlight reel.
7. Export and share a highlight reel instantly
You’ve created a highlight reel in CapCut. Now, it’s time to export it and share it with the world. To do that, look in the upper right corner of your CapCut screen. There, you’ll see the Share button. Tap Share.
CapCut will set about exporting your video. Exporting here means saving. When it’s finished, you’ll have a saved copy of your highlight reel video in your Camera Roll. You can edit, share, and post it like any other video! But if your goal is to post on social media, CapCut streamlines the process even more.
When your video is exported, you’ll see a Share to TikTok button right below the video preview. And below this, you can directly post to Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, and other platforms. CapCut truly makes it easy to post social media videos right from the app.
