I absolutely love static site generators. But their biggest weakness (when using them for clients and non-technical folks) is their lack of integrated CMS.
There are a lot of third-party options. I’ve found a few that I think get the job done. But candidly, I haven’t found any that I really love.
But I recently learned about Kirby, and I think it might be the perfect modern CMS.
Kirby is not a static site generator. It’s a dynamically generated site generator with a caching layer in front of it to improve performance.
Like WordPress, it’s powered by PHP. Unlike WordPress, there’s no database. It’s all flat .txt and .yml files.
Like WordPress, it’s highly configurable. Unlike WordPress, it’s light and lean. Unburdened by decades of backwards compatibility, the syntax is clean and modern.
Honestly, Kirby feels like “11ty but dynamic and powered by PHP,” for better and worse.
It is incredibly customizable. You can easily add any type of data you want. You can generate pages dynamically from APIs. You can add roles and permissions and build simple sites or powerful apps. You can even customize the dashboard UI.
But also like 11ty, it’s so flexible that getting started can be a bit unwieldy. There’s no “right way” to use Kirby, so finding the path that works best for you can take some trial and error.
The documentation and community support are excellent, but I’d love some “download and go” boilerplates for things like a blog or a marketing brochure site.
