In recent years, the interest in veganism has been growing rapidly, reflecting a greater awareness of health, sustainability, and animal welfare. With this demand, the opportunity arises to use technology to make life easier for those adopting this lifestyle. Today, I’m going to share how I developed a vegan recipes app using Swift and integration with the OpenAI API.
The Project
The project was motivated by the need for an app that offers personalized vegan recipes in a practical and quick way. By using Swift, Apple’s native language, I was able to create an application that is not only efficient but also provides an optimized user experience.
Why Swift?
Swift is a language that has gained significant traction in mobile development due to its safety, speed, and intuitiveness. Many well-known apps, like LinkedIn and WordPress, are developed with Swift. This language offers superior performance, especially compared to hybrid or cross-platform alternatives, due to its direct access to device resources.
AI Integration and app architecture
AI integration was one of the key aspects of the development process. The use of intelligent algorithms allows the app to learn about the user’s preferences, suggesting personalized recipes and nutritional information. For this, I used the OpenAI API, which proved to be a robust choice for handling real-time personalization needs.
I followed the Model-View-Controller (MVC) pattern to organize the code, ensuring a clear separation between the application logic and the user interface. This facilitates maintenance and allows the app to scale, especially when new features are added.
Security
User data security was a priority from the start. I utilized OAuth authentication to protect access and SSL/TLS encryption to ensure data security during transmission. With this, we were able to create a secure environment for users without compromising usability.
Database with Realm
For the database, I chose Realm. It offers superior performance, especially in intensive read and write operations, which are common in a recipe app. Additionally, Realm simplifies real-time synchronization with MongoDB Atlas Device Sync, ensuring that user data is always up to date, regardless of the device used.
Benchmarking: Swift vs. JavaScript
One of the most fascinating parts of this project was testing Swift’s performance compared to JavaScript. While JavaScript is widely used, especially in web development, I wanted to see how it would perform in a mobile development scenario where efficiency is crucial.
The Test
I chose the Bubble Sort algorithm, known for its simplicity but also for not being the most efficient. The goal was not to compare the efficiency of the algorithm itself but to observe how the two languages handle processing-intensive operations.
I implemented Bubble Sort in both Swift and JavaScript, and here are the results:
func bubbleSort(_ array: [Int]) -> [Int] {
var arr = array
for i in 0..<arr.count {
for j in 0..<arr.count - i - 1 {
if arr[j] > arr[j + 1] {
arr.swapAt(j, j + 1)
}
}
}
return arr
}
swift's code
function bubbleSort(arr) {
let len = arr.length;
for (let i = 0; i < len; i++) {
for (let j = 0; j < len - 1 - i; j++) {
if (arr[j] > arr[j + 1]) {
let temp = arr[j];
arr[j] = arr[j + 1];
arr[j + 1] = temp;
}
}
}
return arr;
}
javascript code
Results
Swift: 1.5 microseconds
JavaScript: 15 milliseconds
The results were impressive. Swift executed the algorithm in 1.5 microseconds, while JavaScript took 15 milliseconds to complete the same task. This benchmark highlights the strength of Swift, especially when it comes to applications where speed and efficiency are crucial, such as in mobile development.
Benchmark Implications
This performance test reinforces the advantage of using a native language like Swift for mobile app development. The ability to execute computationally intensive tasks so efficiently can be a differentiator in projects where performance is a critical factor. Additionally, the user experience is directly impacted by the app's speed, and Swift has proven to be a superior choice in this regard.
Conclusion
Developing this vegan recipes app with Swift and AI was an enriching journey, allowing me to explore the capabilities of this powerful language and the efficiency of AI integration. The benchmark not only confirmed the advantages of using Swift but also demonstrated how language choice can directly impact the end-user experience.
I hope this article has provided useful insights for anyone considering developing native iOS apps, especially with a focus on personalization and performance.
