APIs are the backbone of modern web and mobile applications; they enable the transfer of data between servers and clients easily. In recent times, two of the most popular ways in which APIs are designed are REST-Representational State Transfer-and GraphQL-Graph Query Language. While powerful, both come with their advantages and limitations. Choosing the right one for your project may affect your application's performance, speed of development, and long-term maintainability. This article provides a detailed comparison between REST and GraphQL based on their main features, advantages, and disadvantages. It also gives recommendations as to in which cases one should be used instead of another.

What is REST?

REST is a traditional architecture style that bases web services on a set of constraints, relying on standard HTTP methods like GET, POST, PUT, DELETE, and PATCH to operate on resources. Each resource shall be identifiable by a unique URL (endpoint), and the server shall determine how the response shall be formatted.

Pros of REST:
