How to Properly Layout Pages and Align Components
When designing or developing, achieving a consistent layout with proper spacing and alignment is crucial for maintaining a clean and structured UI. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to approach layout design and ensure proper alignment in your projects.
Consistency is Key
The primary goal is to maintain consistent spacing and alignment across all components on the page. Consistency improves readability and provides a polished look.-
Measuring Spacing
- Design: When designing, use Figma's built-in ruler tool to measure and maintain consistent spacing.
- Development: For development, use the Page Grid Chrome extension and set the grid size to 50px. You can find the extension here: Page Grid Extension.
Once installed, enable the grid on your localhost site to view 50px grid boxes, ensuring uniform spacing.
- Layout Example Refer to the example image of the layout. Even though the component in this example has a smaller width, the consistency in spacing—from the left side of the sidebar to the top of the navbar—remains intact. This is more important than centering small components.
-
Why Not Center Components?
Center-aligning components may work for smaller elements, but it can cause inconsistency when your page has larger components like tables.- A small component might look fine in the center of the page, but larger components could be misaligned.
- To maintain consistency, it’s best to align all components to the left with proper spacing, as this reflects the natural left-to-right reading flow.
-
Vertical and Horizontal Alignment
- Notice how the search bar is vertically aligned with the content. This consistency in alignment provides structure.
- Similarly, the sidebar's first element is horizontally aligned with the top of the content, reinforcing the overall layout flow. ![Group 434.png]
- Spacing in the Top Right Section In the top-right corner, where the check-in button, notification icon, and profile are located, consistent spacing is maintained. Each element has a gap of one grid box (50px), ensuring everything looks balanced and proportional.
By following these principles, you can ensure your layouts are visually balanced and maintain a professional appearance across different screen sizes and content variations.
