Productivity
It was a very productive week. I've been just working on DPI projects one after the other. I think I had a couple of months to work on them, but I'm already at the final project of the first phase. I may have been working a bit too hard though... as I got a bit of carpel tunnel right now. It's not too bad, but I will rest a little bit.
Open Office Hours
I think every other week, some of the instructors from the DPI program have open office hours where students of the program could come and work on their assignments and also participate in lectures. I asked before hand if it was mandatory and was told it was not. It's just that because I've been depressed for a while, I was in no mindset to really socialize.
Meeting Some Folks
I was invited to go to an Open Office session. At first I didn't want to go, but then decided to. Chicago street parking is out of hand ($7 an hour)! But I met the instructor and some of the other program participants. They were all very nice. I forget how important a support system can be sometimes. We all shared our passion for coding and our disappointment on how tough the job market is now. I am very glad I went.
Phase 2
I asked the instructor what's the next phase would be like. It's flexible and we can pick from traditional on-site class, hybrid on-site/remote, or fully remote. We would not get the stipend unless we choose on-site. I was hoping to find a job by now, but if I don't by the time phrase 2 starts, I might do the on-site option. But even if I get a job, I want to still continue in the program with at least the fully-remote option.
Phase 1 Final Project
So I've been learning a lot in the last two week. HTML & CSS was very interesting. I learned the Ruby is a lot like Python so it wasn't so bad. I learned to make a some command line apps with object oriented programming, including one that uses a chatgpt AI API to make a chatbot. I made some simple math apps that utilizes HTML forms. I feel pretty comfortable with Ruby now. For my Final Project, I want to use this free API that lists game sales to make a nice looking web page. I was going to start this weekend, but I'm still resting up with the carpel tunnel mentioned earlier. I have at least looked at the API and built a layout in my head.
