Dato is a replacement for the system menu bar clock. By default, it looks exactly the same, but when you click it, you get a small calendar, the current time in various time zones (even with custom names), week number, and more. You can customize what to show in the menu and the menu bar.

Dato supports all the locales and languages that macOS supports for dates, times, and the calendar, but the menus are English-only.

To replace the system clock, click it, select “Open Date & Time Preferences…” in the menu, uncheck “Show date and time in menu bar”, then drag Dato to the position you want in the menu bar while pressing the Command key.

Features

  • Calendar.
  • Your upcoming events at a glance.
  • Time zones, optionally with custom names.
  • Search time zones by city (13K cities included).
  • Customizable.
  • Supports opening an event directly in your favorite calendar app (Calendar, Fantastical 2, BusyCal).
  • Fully offline with no network entitlements, for your privacy benefit.

Feedback wanted!

Note that this is just a minimal first version. I didn’t want to bloat it with features for imaginary use-cases. Please let me know what features you want to see, even if it’s what’s mentioned below.

Roadmap

  • Custom date format.
  • Time slider for the time zones.
  • Show the time for multiple time zones in the menu bar.
  • Customizable keyboard shortcut to open Dato.
  • Improved time zone management, including easier reordering.
  • A proper preferences window.
  • Timers and stopwatches (like the iOS Clock app, but including Pomodoro).
  • Maybe: Alarm clock.

Why I made this

My wife was on a 2-week training course in Australia and I wanted to know her local time. I always thought the system clock menu bar widget was a missed opportunity, so I built this in a few days as a replacement to scratch my own itch.
