The latest IBM report shows that data breach costs rose from USD 3.86 million to USD 4.24 million in 2021. Crazy, I know. As technology evolves, cyberattacks become extremely sophisticated and audacious, so more and more companies are worried about how to keep their data safe.
With the costs of data leaks rising and cyberattacks soaring, we can't stress enough the importance of investing in cybersecurity. This area is constantly evolving and expanding, requiring highly skilled professionals to help organisations perform cybersecurity roles. As companies identify what is needed to properly manage current and future risks, the demand for skilled cybersecurity professionals increases. We've talked a bit about what you need to become a cybersecurity on our blog.
According to Lovemondays, the salary range for a cybersecurity professional is around $120,000 annually, good news for those who'd like to kickstart a career in tech. With that in mind, here are some tips for anyone interested in joining this field:
1. Get the right skills
Cybersecurity professionals need some skills to perform their duties effectively. Dynamism, logical reasoning, ability to work in a team and knowledge of other languages, are some of the essential requirements for the good exercise of the profession. Therefore, if you want to invest in this profession, you will have to develop these skills.
Other than honestly evaluating your skills, take some time to talk to cybersec professionals and ask a few questions to gauge how to proceed with thinking of a cybersecurity role:
Is there a certain technology I should learn first?
How can I get more practice/experience in this field?
Are there entry-level/internship opportunities available?
What are the career advancement opportunities?
2. Research relevant certifications
As in several other areas in the technology segment, in cybersecurity there's a common international practice of requesting certifications. I strongly advise you to study and look for the more relevant certifications according to the job you're trying to land, along with checking the knowledge and professional profile of those who already occupy this position.
With these certifications you can prove that you have the necessary knowledge and/or experience in the areas covered. These are three essential certificates for professionals in the sector:
CISSP — Certified Information Systems Security Professional: it is the most comprehensive certificate and covers the main concepts of information systems security;
CSSLP — Certified Secure Software Lifecycle Professional: aimed at all stages of the software and application development cycle;
SSCP — Systems Security Certified Practitioner: specific certificate for professionals who deal with the routine infrastructure of information systems within companies.
3. Check what companies are doing
Look for companies that can offer you the opportunity to experience the routine of a cybersecurity analyst, so you can put all the skills and knowledge acquired over time into practice. Currently, especially with the trend of remote work, companies are constantly looking for new professionals for this area.
Also, look for companies which offer smart solutions and top-notch technology. It's quite exciting to be part of a team who's working on truly unique and advanced technologies, and that will also take your skills to a whole new level. At Vaultree we are building a revolutionary technology to change how the world works with data: fully encrypted.
4. Join interesting communities
Communities are a great place to network and learn from fellow colleagues. Try to get involved in communities and groups that provide relevant information and stay updated on cybersecurity market trends.
We strongly believe in this. We're building a community to gather cybersecurity professionals and enthusiasts to discuss, share knowledge and find solutions together aiming for a better digital future. You can join the waiting list here.
5. Develop passion for learning
The web is a valuable source of information on information security. It can be used rationally to learn, acquire knowledge on the subject and apply the latest methods and techniques in your daily life. I'm particularly interested in tutorials and how-to-guides.
Keep learning and sharing knowledge is definitely one of the most important skills of every tech/cybersec professional. What are your favourite places to learn and exchange information on cyber security?
