Boost Productivity and Master Any Concept Faster with ChatGPT.
After receiving a positive response to my previous article, I have decided to write another piece on how ChatGPT can enhance your learning experience. This article serves as a justification for why ChatGPT has the potential to revolutionize education and the learning experience as a whole.
Personally, I have never been a big fan of reading textbooks — I haven’t even opened one throughout my entire college education. Instead, I prefer to dive into a topic directly and try to connect the dots as I go, making notes along the way. Rather than relying on textbooks, I heavily rely on Google to read up on new concepts, as it has made life a lot simpler. But, after trying out ChatGPT for a few days, I realized that it has the potential to change the way I approach learning new concepts. Instead of using Google, I can simply plug in my queries to ChatGPT and receive better answers.
This article is a consolidation of different prompts and methods I use to improve my learning efficiency and grasp concepts a lot faster. ChatGPT is much more than just a tool for copying homework or getting answers.
Summarization
This is perhaps one of the simplest yet most brilliant uses of ChatGPT. While there have been multiple summarization tools in the past, none of them have been able to tailor information to your specific needs like ChatGPT can. It can create bullet points, categorize them, and even provide simple explanations.
Example Prompt:
- <Enter Information> Explain the data provided to a high school graduate.
In this example, I copied information about zero-knowledge proofs from Wikipedia and specified that I did not want to use any external data. This was done to prevent the inclusion of any misinformation. While it may not always be necessary to specify negative prompts, it’s important to do so if you want to ensure 100% accuracy in your summarizations or any other responses generated by ChatGPT.
Feedback Loop
In reinforcement learning, we often use a feedback loop to train machine learning models. I discovered that the same approach can be applied to human learning for better comprehension of new concepts. It’s like having a personal tutor who can clarify your doubts without the hesitation of asking multiple questions. I recently stumbled upon this method while learning about a cloud concept. To utilize this approach, you need to set the context either by providing data or utilizing the data embedded within ChatGPT. A sample scenario can help simplify the process.
Example Prompt:
- Explain <name of topic>.
- Let me explain what I understood using a scenario: <Sample scenario>
This is my favorite method for quickly understanding any topic. It provides instant feedback and corrects any mistakes made while helping to structure your answer properly. It’s a blessing for people like me who struggle to comprehend certain topics without real-life scenarios. ChatGPT clearly verified if my answer was correct and also gave a structure to my answer.
Concept Breakdown
When reading certain topics in textbooks or on Google, it can be difficult to backtrack to the root topic (like stemming or lemmatization in artificial intelligence) without having to read the previous content to understand the overall context. This redundancy can be time-consuming, especially if you’re on a tight preparation schedule. ChatGPT is excellent at breaking down complex concepts to their core, making it easier to understand the topic without having to go through unnecessary details.
This isn’t a specific prompt, but rather a feature that allows you to ask ChatGPT follow-up questions related to the previous answer. This is useful for gaining a deeper understanding of a concept and exploring related topics.
Mindmaps
If you prefer visual aids when learning, ChatGPT can create diagrams based on the text you provide. While the default visualization feature may not be perfect due to the restrictions of GPT-3.5, you can still modify the diagrams to make them cleaner and more visually appealing. Hopefully, the image analysis feature of GPT-4 will improve this even further.
Example Prompts:
- Create a flowchart/mindmap/visual representation.
Flashcards
One scientifically proven method for effective information retention is through the use of flashcards, which employ the technique of active recall. This involves presenting questions with the answers provided on the back. With traditional methods, you would have to create your own flashcards, but with ChatGPT, the process is now simplified. Simply input the information you want to study and prompt ChatGPT to generate questions based on the provided data.
Example prompts:
- Generate questions based on the data provided. Act like a flash card. Repeat the questions I get wrong. Strictly Do NOT ask all questions at once. Ask me one question and once I answer move on to the next question
This method can also be useful for learning new languages, as you can have a conversation with ChatGPT and it will correct any mistakes you make along the way. This can be a helpful tool for improving your language skills and practicing in a more interactive way.
Conclusion
Well, these are some methods that I personally use on a daily basis to learn new concepts quickly and interactively. Although GPT-4 is already released, I am still waiting for access to the API. Additionally, ChatGPT Plus is missing the image analysis feature, which I am excited to see in action. This feature will take note-taking to the next level. Thanks to tools like ChatGPT, learning new concepts has never been easier, and I believe it will have a powerful impact on people’s lives. I hope you enjoyed reading this article, and please let me know if you have any other prompts that you use to improve your productivity.
