What is LGBTQ+?
LGBTQ+ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer/Questioning. Many people may not be familiar with the meanings of these terms. Here is a breakdown of each:
- Lesbian: A woman attracted to other women.
- Gay: A man attracted to other men.
- Bisexual: Individuals attracted to both their own gender and other genders. For example, a man who is attracted to both women and men.
- Transgender: An individual whose gender identity differs from their assigned sex at birth. For instance, someone assigned male at birth but identifies as female.
- Queer/Questioning: Individuals who are exploring their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Who hates them?
The majority of educated people maintain a neutral stance towards LGBTQ+ individuals. However, there are a few individuals who openly express hatred towards them, causing trauma to people from LGBTQ+ Community.
Why people hates them?
Understand that most people who hate them are you know from which community. You can see the comment section of the article at https://dev.to/devteam/happy-pride-month-dev-community-298e to confirm this. The reason for this hatred is that these individuals have been conditioned by their religious teachers to hate LGBTQ+ individuals.
Personally, I feel that the best way to lessen the hatred against the LGBTQ+ community is to ask politicians to pass laws making it illegal to preach hatred against any community. Hatred only leads to animosity between communities and harms the well-being of both the haters and the individuals being hated.
What if I hate them and want to remove my hatred?
The single most effective way to overcome your hatred for the LGBTQ+ community is to ask yourself why you hate LBGTQ community. Just repeatedly ask yourself this question "Why do hate LBGTQ community" and you yourself will logically see the truth.
Also, as a matter of fact, similar to how you and I did not have any control over whether we would be born as boys or girls, LGBTQ+ individuals have no control over their sexual orientation or gender identity. A person becomes LGBTQ+ due to genetic factors when chromosomes match differently
So, hating a person just because they are LGBTQ+ is pointless, as there is no fault on their part in being who they are. Even you and I could have been LGBTQ+ if our parents' chromosomes had matched differently.
How can we help LGBTQ in practical terms?
That's a brilliant question! Here are two practical ways to help members of the LGBTQ+ community:
Stand against the haters
In the history of my country Bharata, specifically the Mahabharata, there was an incident when a person named Dushasana attempted to molest Draupadi. Many good people were present, but none came forward to prevent this terrible act from happening. This led to the occurrence of the Mahabharata, and all those people who were present but did not raise their voice against this Adharma, had to face death because they did not raise their voice against the wrongdoing.
Similarly, you must not stay quiet when an LGBTQ+ person is discriminated against or insulted in front of your eyes. You must be brave and stand against the hater, asking them to stop their nonsense.
PS: Even I wasn't brave earlier, but I learned martial arts, and due to that, I became brave and now stand against any adharma done in front of me. Based on my experience, I suggest learning martial arts like Karate or Kalaripayattu, so you can become brave and stand against adharma.
Help the LGBTQ community
Many members of the LGBTQ+ community face mental trauma because they are hated for who they are. As a developer, you can help them by providing support, accepting them for who they are, and listening to them. There are many times in their lives when all they need is someone to listen to them.
