1. How to Create a Back to School Drive Flyer Background in Photoshop
Step 1
Open Photoshop and create a new document, File > New. Set the dimensions to 8.75 x 11.25 in, 300 Resolution, and CMYK Color Mode.
Step 2
Open the Vibrant Background image in Photoshop. Drag it over to the new document we just created. Resize the vibrant background image to 60%. Create a new Solid Color and fill it with #398bca
, and change the Blending Mode to Hard Light.
Step 3
Open the Chalk6.png and Chalk10.png files from the Chalk Textures folder and open them in Photoshop. Resize Chalk10 and Chalk6 to 30%. Apply a Color Overlay by double-clicking on the layer and use #ffffff
. Change the Opacity to 60%.
Step 4
Open the Notebook image in Photoshop. Go to Select > Subject. Your notebook should now be selected.
The selection is not perfect, so now we will clean it up a bit. Grab your Pen Tool (P) and select the area that wasn't included. Go to the top of your toolbar and click Selection. Make sure Add to Selection is checked, along with Anti-aliased. Click OK.
Step 5
Create a mask by selecting the Add a mask icon at the bottom of the Layers panel. Drag and drop the notebook image into our welcome back poster. Apply a Drop Shadow to the notebook layer. Use the color #181718
.
Step 6
Open the Sticky Note image in Photoshop. Use the Pen Tool (P) and make an outline around one of the green sticky notes. Click Selection in the top toolbar and press OK.
Step 7
Create a mask by selecting the Add a mask icon at the bottom of the Layers panel. Drag and drop the sticky note image onto the back 2 school flyer template. Apply a Color Overlay by double-clicking the layer using #f8ec21
.
Step 8
Make a selection from the sticky note and create a new layer. Fill the new selection layer with #0a4f39
. Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and set the Radius to 10 pixels. Change the Color Mode to Multiply with an Opacity 48%. Rotate the shadow like the image below.
Step 9
Open the Pencil.psd file in Photoshop. Drag and drop the pencil and its shadow onto the welcome back flyer. Create a new Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer above the pencil. Change the Brightness to -10 and Contrast to -30 in the Properties panel. Right-click the Brightness/Contrast layer and select Create Clipping Mask.
Create another layer above the Brightness/Contrast layer and take a black soft brush using the Brush Tool (B) and apply a shadow to the top of the pencil. Right-click the top pencil shadow layer and select Create Clipping Mask.
Step 10
Open the Eraser PSD file in Photoshop. Drag and drop the eraser and its shadow onto the back to school flyer.
Step 11
Open the backpack photo in Photoshop. Use the Pen Tool (P) and make an outline around the backpack. After you make the outline, go to the top toolbar and click Selection. Press OK. Create a layer mask by selecting Add layer mask at the bottom of the Layers panel. Place this backpack photo onto our background and flip it horizontally (Edit > Transform > Flip Horizontal).
Apply a Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer. Change the Brightness to -14 and the Contrast to -30. Right-click the Brightness/Contrast layer and select Create Clipping Mask.
Step 12
Make a selection from the backpack and create a new layer. Fill the new selection layer with #223a3c
. Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and set the Radius to 9 px. Go to Filter > Blur > Motion Blur and set the angle to 69° and the Distance to 61 px. Change the Blending Mode to Multiply with an Opacity of 39%. Rotate the shadow as shown in the image below.
Step 13
Open the Paper Plane PSD file and drag and drop the paper plane with the shadow onto our welcome flyer. Save the file as BackToSchool.Tif.
2. How to Format and Apply Text Effects in InDesign for a Welcome Back Poster
Step 1
Open InDesign and create a new document. File > New > Document and change the dimensions to 8.5 x 11 in, 0.5 Margins, and 0.125 Bleed on each side.
Step 2
File > Place the BackToSchool.Tif background into InDesign.
Step 3
Open the Educations Icons in Illustrator. Copy (Command-C) and paste (Command-V) the icons into InDesign. Change the ruler and medal vector icons to the Paper swatch. Create a new swatch and change the color of the diploma and backpack vector icons to C0 M0 Y0 K74.
Step 4
Install the College, Flanders Script and Composition fonts. Using the Type Tool (T), create a text frame and type "Back", "School", and "Party" using these settings:
- Back: College font, 109 pt, Paper swatch
- School: College font, 109 pt, Paper swatch
- Party: Flander Script, 109 pt, Paper swatch
Select all three text boxes and go to Object > Transform > Shear. Change the Angle to 7°, and the Axis should be Vertical.
Step 5
Create a new swatch (C88 M100 Y0 K15). Select all three text boxes again and apply a Drop Shadow, Object > Effects > Drop Shadow. Use the settings below:
- Blending Mode: Normal, C88 M100 Y0 K15, Opacity: 100%
- Distance: 0.125 in
- Angle: 135°
- X and Y Offset: 0.0884 in
- Size: 0 in
- Spread: 0%
- Noise: 0%
Step 6
Create a new swatch C14 M17 Y0 K2. Highlight a text frame and apply a Linear Gradient panel using the Paper swatch and the light purple swatch we just created. Do this to the other two text frames.
Step 7
Create a new swatch C6 M9 Y100 K0, grab the Ellipse Tool (L), and make a circle. Go to Object > Transform > Shear and change the Angle to 7°. Create a text frame and type "to" using Flanders 49 pt font. Change the Angle of this text to 7°.
Create a new swatch C61 M0 Y0 K3 and grab the Rectangle Tool (M). Change the Angle to 7°. Grab the Type Tool (T) and type the date for the party using Composition 27 pt font.
Step 8
Create five more text boxes using these settings:
- Club Gym: College font, 30 pt, C88, M100, Y0, K15
- Address: Composition font, 13 pt, C0 M0 Y0 K74
- DJ: Composition font, 18 pt, C0 M0 Y0 K74
- Doors Open: Composition font, 14 pt, C0 M0 Y0 K74
- Time: College font, 54 pt, C88, M100, Y0, K15
Step 9
Using the Pen Tool (P), add a blue box to the bottom right corner. Change the Angle to 7°. Add two text boxes using these settings:
- Admission: Composition font, 14 pt, C88, M100, Y0, K15
- $25: College font, 54 pt, C88, M100, Y0, K15
