Have you ever seen placeholders in PowerPoint and wondered how to use them? Placeholders help you easily add to your slide while keeping your slide design intact.
Sometimes the placeholders have prompts such as “Click to insert picture” or “Click to add text.” These prompts let you know what that placeholder is for.
This article covers what a placeholder is in PowerPoint, how to use a placeholder and some PowerPoint FAQs.
What Is a Placeholder in PowerPoint?
Are you wondering what a placeholder is in PowerPoint? It's a pre-formatted container where you can put text, graphics, or video.
These containers make it easy to format your slides. Some premium templates have placeholders in them already. A common placeholder in premium templates is a picture placeholder.
How to Use a Placeholder in PowerPoint
Here’s how to use a placeholder in PowerPoint:
1. Choose a Template
In this tutorial, we’ll be using the Makeit PowerPoint template. This template comes with over 150 total slides and five color schemes.
Makeit comes with infographics, illustrations, and graphics. It also comes with picture placeholders where you can easily drag and drop an image of your choice into the placeholder.
2. Open Microsoft PowerPoint
You'll see two different placeholders on slide two of the Makeit PowerPoint template. One for images and one for text.
In the placeholder for images, you’ll see the words “click icon to add picture”. In the text placeholder there's fake text (text that's just holding the place for the text you'll add) inside the placeholder.
3. Blank Slide
To add your own placeholders, you need to add a new slide. To add a new slide, click on the New Slide button in the toolbar. When you click on the button, it'll duplicate the slide before.
If it duplicates a placeholder that you don’t want, just click on the placeholder and press Delete on your keyboard.
4. Blank Slide Layout
If you want to change the placeholder layout on a slide, click the Layout button in the toolbar. When you click on this button, a menu appears. Choose a layout that you want.
How to Customize Using Placeholders
Let’s go back to slide two of the Makeit template for this section of the tutorial so that we can customize our presentation using the placeholders:
1. Add Text
Replacing the fake text in the placeholder on your slide is easy. Highlight the fake text that you want to get rid of.
After you highlight the text, press Delete on your keyboard. After you press Delete, click inside the box. Once you see a blinking cursor, you can start typing your own text.
2. Add an Image
You use two methods to add an image into the placeholder on your slide.
Method 1: Insert an Image
The first method is to click on the Insert Picture from File icon. After you click on this icon, your file finder appears. Find your image and double-click on your image file. Your image appears in the picture placeholder.
Method 2: Insert an Image
The second method is to click on the Insert tab. Then, click on the Pictures button. When you click on this button, a menu appears. Choose the right option for you based on where your picture file is located.
Once you’ve located your image file, double-click on it. Your image appears in the picture placeholder.
3. Resize a Placeholder
To resize a placeholder, drag the white boxes around the picture or text. Depending on which white box you drag, the textbox or picture placeholder adjusts on the side the box is on.
4. Rotate a Placeholder
A circle with a circular arrow is at the top of the box around your text or picture. If you click on this circle and make a circle with your mouse, then your placeholder rotates the way your mouse is rotating.
